Top 10 Coaches Poll Idea/Discussion
Posted by Allan Sellers on Sunday, Apr. 10th, 2022 at 1:30 AM

Mike Halpin asked:

What, if anything, would it take to implement a top-10 "coaches poll" system? It seems more attainable now that we've got many more teams?

Can you share more on your ideas of how this would work Mike?   And others please feel free to add ideas...

Each coach selects a Top 10 from their perspective?

Coaches that vote get XX RPs for voting?

Deadline to vote each session is?  (Like Sunday night or Monday night and publish on Tuesday)

Open to ideas/discussion on this.  I think I did this in the soccer league for a bit at one time so I may have some code sitting around to help build it.

I honestly know know exactly how the NCAA coaches polls work, but perhaps along with the orders submission, we can select teams from the drop down menu as our selection as our top ten picks, but can't pick your own team, of course. Then every #1 pick earns 10 points and then reverse on down to a qoth pick getting 1 point. Then each team is sorted by total points with the Top-10 getting the honors.

Is that how it works in real life?

Mike Halpin on Sunday, Apr. 10th, 2022 at 2:20 AM

Honestly DON'T know, that is.

Mike Halpin on Sunday, Apr. 10th, 2022 at 2:21 AM

1 = CB of Dallas Bulldogs

2-10 = nobody cares

It would work like the above every week surely?

Craig Bucknall on Sunday, Apr. 10th, 2022 at 11:52 AM

I like Mike's idea I think that would be fun

Aires Martins Jr on Tuesday, Apr. 12th, 2022 at 11:11 AM

Thanks for the feedback.

I think Mike has the concepts with the points correct.

I know Criag was (probably) joking but that brings me to...how do we "Craig-proof" this poll?  :-)

Ideas for that:

1) You can't vote for your own team or should you be allowed to vote for your own team?

2) Every team you select that ends up in the Top 10 you get 1 RP for.

For me that makes it participatory with a semi-interest in trying to find the best teams.

I'll need some final rules like the above though to make a run at coding this...

Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Apr. 12th, 2022 at 9:53 PM

I think definitely not have the option to vote for your own team. And I think IRL the coaches polls are public, so each team knows who voted for what other teams and where. (after my earlier post I started doing some research.) If it becomes clear that there's some shenanigans, then we can probably deal with it at that time. I'd be less concerned about the potential tinkering than with it just being difficult to research and put the effort in to rank. But if we're just doing top-10 it should not be too time consuming. Overall record should be enough to get most of the spots filled.

Mike Halpin on Wednesday, Apr. 13th, 2022 at 12:37 AM

Def no voting for your own team is my two cents.   I like the 1 RP for every team you get right

Aires Martins Jr on Wednesday, Apr. 13th, 2022 at 3:44 AM

When I read this properly I'm not really getting it....so to clarify....

1) We vote for the top 10 coaches as we see them each week when submitting orders?

2) We get 1 RP for each coach we accurately predict to be in the top 10 at the end of that weekend?

So...how is the top 10 decided? Just by other votes or performance based?

I'm all for people earning more RP for getting involved but if this in any way makes the rich richer and the poor poorer it's a no from me

I'm probably missing something despite reading and re-reading the above lol :)

Craig Bucknall on Wednesday, Apr. 13th, 2022 at 9:12 AM

Thanks Mike and Aires and CB.  And no CB, you aren't getting it right.  :-)

Actually, I just didn't explain my idea very well, so as usual, I'm the problem.

1. Each team selects 10 teams after the session is over (I would create a new form).  Poll would be up after  matches complete and available through Monday.  On Tuesday the results would be published.  Every team picked 1st gets 10 poll points (not RPs, not CPs), 2nd gets 9 poll points, etc.  We total them all up and display the top 10 on a page (likely front page).

2. You can pick any of the other 31 teams.  You cannot select  your team for the Top 10.

3. For every team you select as a top 10 team, IF they end up being in the top 10 after totaling all the votes, you get 1 RP for every team you selected to the Top 10.

We do not have to do the RP part, but I recommended it for a three reasons when we did this in the soccer/football league:

a) In the past people might not focus on who to vote for or just mess around (pick the bottom 10 or something)

b) Other people, like me, would make a point of NEVER picking certain people (like my good friend Ian in United).  Ha!

c) I think it allows people to want to pick a top 10.  They can still have their criteria and do whatever they want, but it may result in a more "accurate" (less vindictive) coaches poll.  :-)

d) Gives some incentive.  When we did it in United it maybe lasted a season.

I think to your "rich get richer" point, that's always something good to consider.  In this case though, whether I had a great team or a building team, I can't pick my own team.  So if the cosmos align and our poor, rebuilding Quincy made the top 10, that means there's a spot there that I couldn't have selected (my team) and the best I could get was 9 RP.

Does that all make sense CB (and others)?  Let me know and I can clarify further. The other route is another 22-minute video podcast and none of us want that...  :-)

Allan Sellers on Wednesday, Apr. 13th, 2022 at 10:12 PM

Yes I get it now I tink, thanks, although I would like a podcast too just to make certain ;)

Final question....my criteria for selecting a top 10 could be anything...I'm guessing most would go for performance based but in theory it could be anything (most active etc) - the incentive though is the RP's for going for a top 10 that agrees with my fellow coaches

Craig Bucknall on Thursday, Apr. 14th, 2022 at 8:58 AM

I hope we don't just go on performance as I can't vote for myself :-)

Seriously though it could be things like Tuscon beating Quincy to give Amy a high vote (even though Al didn't play T7).

The only worry is people voting for coaches because they think everyone else will and want the extra RP.

Steve Turner on Thursday, Apr. 14th, 2022 at 9:10 AM

You both make good points.

So...

Drop the RP award for correct teams chosen and just make it 5k of the 40k media bonus?

There's still a bit of shenanigans that can happen and maybe that's okay?

Agree on selecting top 10 could be on standings, or recent performance or big win, etc.

Allan Sellers on Thursday, Apr. 14th, 2022 at 12:39 PM

I think this is a great idea. I was all on board with the "predict the top 10" idea too until I saw Steve's post and then it just becomes a popularity contest. I don't want this to be a popularity contest. So yeah, just have it be another way to earn part of the media bonus.

As an idea... maybe have separate catefories for bonuses? I like seeing all the match comments and blog posts, so maybe keep that as a separate 40k cap, and have this be the start of some new "participation" cap...  To start, it can be a category of 1 for that extra 5k. When we get more of these great ideas, this bucket of stuff can grow.

But back to the topic at hand, I'm 100% on board for this.

Rob Peterson on Thursday, Apr. 14th, 2022 at 6:32 PM

How about we give it a try on an informal basis to see how it goes first?

Mike Jaffe on Thursday, Apr. 14th, 2022 at 9:42 PM

Is a "top 10 coach's poll" a chance for the top 10 coaches to rank their favorite teams? How do we decide who the top 10 coaches are? Can we go by hats?

Phil McIntosh on Saturday, Apr. 16th, 2022 at 5:31 AM

I'm all for the popularity contest version as I will be the Top Man every week obviously.

Unless the vote becomes about hats, in which case Micki wins all day long

Craig Bucknall on Saturday, Apr. 16th, 2022 at 7:59 AM

My votes are in!

Mike Jaffe on Tuesday, Apr. 19th, 2022 at 1:57 PM

Could we.use the poll for different categories as well? Best team name? Best hat wearer? Best of the newcomers?

Did any of the newbies make the top ten of the first poll?

Roy Rolsten on Thursday, Apr. 21st, 2022 at 8:52 AM

Alton and Cincinatti.

Steve Turner on Thursday, Apr. 21st, 2022 at 9:45 AM

Poll looks good. Bummed I didn't get to vote in the first one. I guess I should start reading Al's emails before I open my inbox at work on Mondays.

Bryce Kalmbach on Thursday, Apr. 21st, 2022 at 8:31 PM

Phil: Should all managers have an "alternate" photo we use occasionally where they are wearing a hat?  Is that the suggestion?

Craig: The voters have spoken.  Maybe a big performance this weekend from Team Dallas will start to sway voters?

Roy: The forum posts (like this one) DO have an option to creat polls for Forum posts that you can create (up to 10 choices I believe).  You are welcome to give that a try.

Bryce: Well, first read emails from your boss, then YES all the ones from me!  :-)
