Who serves? The MB or the L (Poll)
Posted by Allan Sellers on Sunday, Sep. 17th, 2023 at 3:39 PM

In TMVL the MB/L players share a connection.

 - MB's play front row and then one or both can serve (after they lose their serve the L swaps in).

 - L's play back row and can serve for one of the MBs.

Mrs. Sellers was asking me for a tip on should your MB or L serve in a certain match.

I said, I don't know, what's the SRV difference between the two.

What's your approach in deciding if the L or MB should serve?  I gave some options you probably have more.

I have some opinions and will post but I'd like to hear your thoughts first...

Today I have an L over MB where the respective served are 13 and 15 but if it was say 10 and 12 I might go for the MB.

My vote doesn't encapsulate my entire thought process. DEF also factors in for me.

Jason Halpin on Sunday, Sep. 17th, 2023 at 5:24 PM

Have to take into account the respective levels of the player.

Matt White on Sunday, Sep. 17th, 2023 at 6:04 PM

I generally always have the L serve for the lowest rated MB in Srv. The Def stat is generally better for the L.

Rob Peterson on Sunday, Sep. 17th, 2023 at 7:09 PM

I'm with Jason

Roger Mendonça on Sunday, Sep. 17th, 2023 at 8:25 PM

DEF is very likely to be better for the Libero.

Steve Turner on Sunday, Sep. 17th, 2023 at 9:31 PM

Having said that Nashville have a couple of SRV 16 MBs with decent DEF and their top L hasn't got a great SRV and DEF isn't much better than #2MB's

Steve Turner on Sunday, Sep. 17th, 2023 at 9:37 PM

In regards to my vote, I knew it was a thing but I've never done it

If your MBs' SRV is single digits, it isn't a difficult decision.

Eduard Habermann on Monday, Sep. 18th, 2023 at 4:06 PM

And a complaint: a poll without bonus!

Eduard Habermann on Monday, Sep. 18th, 2023 at 4:07 PM

At least I got it twice this way ... complaining.

Eduard Habermann on Monday, Sep. 18th, 2023 at 4:08 PM

I also take DEF into account when deciding who serves. I'll have a lower SRV Libero serve if their DEF is greater than the MB.

Mike Halpin on Wednesday, Sep. 20th, 2023 at 4:23 AM

Eduard, as I'm sure you're discovering, complaining is a time-honored tradition here, and the primary way many of us earn RPs.

Jason Halpin on Wednesday, Sep. 20th, 2023 at 2:43 PM

Depends on DEF comparatively.

Phil McIntosh on Thursday, Sep. 21st, 2023 at 4:04 AM

Thanks for all the feedback (and complaining Mr. H) on this.  Some interesting ideas here.

The reality is:

- USA Women's Collegiate Volleyball...liberos can serve (just like in TMVL)

- USA Men's Collegiate Volleyball...liberos in D-I, D-II, and D-III cannot serve but NAIA can.

So when Max's team (D-III) plays an NAIA team Max's coach typically "agrees" with the NAIA coach to allow liberos to serve which is an advantage to Max's team.  Max serves a slow "knuckle ball" serve that moves all around and when they try to pass it will often shank it leading to a good chance of Max's team winning the point.  It only happens about twice a season in terms of NAIA matches for Max's team.
