Match Ratings
Posted by Roger Mendonça on Tuesday, Jan. 31st, 2023 at 11:57 AM

As Al mentioned, alongside your player match stats you now have a rating score, which shows how well each player performed in that match.  If they rated over 5.5, that is an above average performance for players in that position.  If it's below 5.5 then..well you can probably guess that bit.

That's probably all you absolutely need to know, but I've set out below some Q&A for those of you who like looking under the hood to see how things work:

- Why have we got individual player ratings?

When we started working out the mechanics for identifying Team of the Week, it became obvious that we needed to rate each player's performance.  If we were collecting all that data, it seemed to make sense to share it with everyone.

- What do you mean by performance?

Each position has key skills that relate to outcomes in a match.  For example, one of the Libero core skills is defence and you can measure their performance in this attribute by the number of digs per set they make.  Not all skills are equal so a weighting has been applied.  Using Liberos as an example again - Defence and Receiving are 45% each of the performance score, Serving and Setting are 5% each.

- How did you work out the average?

It's based on actual performance across all matches played in Seasons 5 and 6. The average Libero across those seasons made 2.47 digs per set.  That became a 5.5 score in that attribute for Liberos.  By comparison, the average Outside Hitter made 1.31 digs per set, so that became the 5.5 score for OHs in that attribute.

- How do you differentiate performance above and below the average?

There's a scale that moves up and down in increments.  So a Libero that makes 1.66 digs per set will score 3.0, while one that makes 3.33 digs per set will score 8.5

- 3.33 digs per set!?! My Libero will never manage that

Mine neither.

- How do the individual skill scores combine to make an overall match rating?

Just added together - after the weighting has been applied.

- Can I see an example of this worked through?

You can see two.  In the first, the A- rated MB Anderson Mack (Antioch) has an absolute shocker in the Shield SF vs Pekin.  In the second MB Miles Castro (Schnectady) plays a blinder against a youtful Spokane, but then he is an A+

Mack:

Total blocks per set 0.2 = 1.5 raw score x 0.48 weighting = 0.72

Kills per set 2.4 = 6.5 raw score x 0.35 weighting = 2.275

Serve Points per set 0.6 = 4.0 raw score x 0.15 weighting = 0.6

Digs per set 0.4 = 6.0 raw score x 0.02 = 0.12

Overall match rating = 0.72 + 2.275 + 0.6 + 0.12 = 3.72

Castro:

Total blocks per set 2.66 = 10 raw score x 0.48 weighting = 4.8

Kills per set 4.0 = 10 raw score x 0.35 weighting = 3.5

Serve Points per set 1 = 5.5 raw score x 0.15 weighting = 0.825

Digs per set 0 = 0 raw score x 0.02 = 0

Overall match rating = 4.8 + 3.5 + 0.825 + 0 = 9.15

- Why did a player rated as highly as Mack perform so poorly?

I really have no clue, which is why Pekin are so bad.  It could just be bad luck, something to do with the position he played in the serving order or the way the opposition fronted up.  I'd want to to review whether this is a regular occurence or a one-off before drawing any conclusions. Steve might have a better idea.

- How will the Team of the Week score be calculated?

To be eligible for Team of the Week a player must appear in at least two matches.  Their ratings across these matches are averaged and those who scored the highest make the cut.

- Is the system perfect?

Almost certainly not.  It seems to work but we're aware of some small glitches that still to be ironed out (for example, Setters and OHs don't seem to get overall natch ratings higher than 9.0 as frequently as other positions), and there will be others we've not noticed.

- How can I help?

We'll publish all the scales, tables and formulas so you can check your own results for accuracy.  Please also keep an eye out for anything that looks odd with either an individual or a whole team score.  Most importantly, if having reviewed the tables and formula you think something in the system could be improved, that would be helpful to know aswell.

- Will you be offended if I criticise something in the system?

No, but I might feel stupid if it's something obvious.

- I have other questions

Fire away...

Thanks for all the hard work Roger and Al.  None of my players got over 7 last session, time for some motivational speaking.

I was interested that my setter in the Cinci vs Alton game got a lower rating than the Alton setter.  In all metrics he was better apart from not getting any Aces on serve (5-0) and a couple of blocks less, so I expected him to be higher.  I guess the aces have prompted the higher rating?

James Tucker on Friday, Feb. 3rd, 2023 at 8:54 AM

On the Cinci Alton game. For player skill ratings a setter gets over half his points from SET so I'm guessing Roger weighs this into the match rating. I also think he uses Assists/SET which was higher for Alton.

On why OHs don't get 9s I looked at it this way.

If a player has one significant skill and you toss a coin, heads=good, tails=bad he'll get a good score 50% of the time.

If he has two significant skills he needs to get 2 heads for a good score: 25%

And with 3 it's 12.5% for a good score.

OHs have 5 skills that go to their skill rating but middle blockers only 3 so I'm not surprised OHs get less 9s.

Steve Turner on Friday, Feb. 3rd, 2023 at 1:00 PM

Ah ok - so "number of" rather than a successful completion %. Thanks Steve.

James Tucker on Friday, Feb. 3rd, 2023 at 1:53 PM

Hi James, thanks for flagging.  I've run the numbers on my spreadsheet and got a 7.51 rating for your Setter.  I'll check with Al and see if we can identify where the discrepancy arises.  This is still lower than Alton's, albeit marghinally now.  You both scored the maximum number of setting points. Alvarez rated higher in Kills and Setting, while Chapelle had a better digging and blocking performance - and by just enough to be rated higher.

Roger Mendonça on Friday, Feb. 3rd, 2023 at 3:55 PM

Apologies James, I made a mistake when checking the figures. The rating is right and the significant difference between the two players was Assists, as Steve guessed, which earned Chapelle 5.6 out of a possible 5,6 and Alvarez "only" 4.76.

Roger Mendonça on Sunday, Feb. 5th, 2023 at 9:57 AM

So who made "team of the week"?

I have a 7,99 and a 7,84 in game 44 as the best Squirrels.

Christer Kallin on Sunday, Feb. 5th, 2023 at 6:11 PM

Best player was probably Jace Wood (L) for Denali - 9.43 in the Kentucky game and a 7.18 against San Diego

Roger Mendonça on Sunday, Feb. 5th, 2023 at 7:38 PM

Argh my eyes....too many numbers and sums...

Craig Bucknall on Wednesday, Feb. 8th, 2023 at 10:58 AM

Now that we have some player ratings in place, THANK YOU ROGER!...

I'm working on a "fool proof" (haha) process to create the team of the week.

So my first session I see this.  Two RS players (I need to pick 1) that are tied for the top spot.

I could do a lot of "co-RS of the week" type stuff, but I don't want to.  When I come up with this I want one winner (or two winners if its an OH or MB for example).

Does anyone have suggestions on tiebreakers.  It could be per position skills or just a general list.  Like:

- most matches played (if a player plays 3 and gets the high avg rating while a player plays 2 and gets the same avg rating I like the 3-match player better; but that's a rare tiebreaker I think)

- most aces (overall session)

- most kills (overall session)

- most digs (overall session)

- most assists (overall session)

and so on.

Again, I'm okay with doing this by position (such as setter where certain skills like assists might be better)  or a generic list.

Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Feb. 21st, 2023 at 10:29 PM

Too much math. Can we just change these ratings to "good" and "bad?"

John Holden on Tuesday, Feb. 21st, 2023 at 10:30 PM

I'd go for top rated in the most weighted skill for the position, as that represents what's key for the role the player has in the team, moving down the skills in order until one player tops out. If they're equal all the way either go for something like Aces or just get Olmec to choose by flipping a metaphorical coin. You just know the first person to lose a coin toss would be Craig and his reaction would be hilarious 😆

Roger Mendonça on Tuesday, Feb. 21st, 2023 at 10:44 PM

Imagine a world where John had no math.   😎

Thanks Roger.  I will look into that approach unless I hear another one to consider.

Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Feb. 21st, 2023 at 11:35 PM

I think the idea of Roger is a good idea.

Pierre van Rossum on Wednesday, Feb. 22nd, 2023 at 6:15 AM

I was thinking the opposite and go for the least or not used. For instance a Setter's attack isn't used and he can be a liability trying dumps that get defended.

So I was going to suggest using kills/set or attack rating as the tie breaker.

Steve Turner on Wednesday, Feb. 22nd, 2023 at 7:39 AM

God I wish I had the time to read all this....I'd probably learn something....

No doubt I'll ask questions answered in this thread in a season or two's time and everyone will say 'where have you been?'

Craig Bucknall on Wednesday, Feb. 22nd, 2023 at 8:34 AM

Thanks Pierre, Steve, and CB for your feedback.

Steve: Thanks for that idea in particular.

Allan Sellers on Wednesday, Feb. 22nd, 2023 at 9:26 PM

Working through the coding and queries now for Team of the Week.  This first week is heavily manual.  Hoping on Sunday to have it in the simulator so its automatic.

The list below is a pretty solid TOTW 6 players for session 1.  As for the RS, it depends on the feedback and what I decide I guess for tiebreakers (so much controversy!).  I can't wait to see what the conspiracy theorists among us do with the "professionally redacted RS results" below...   😎🤔👀

Allan Sellers on Wednesday, Feb. 22nd, 2023 at 11:27 PM

Nice TOTW, but it would be nicer if some players of the Mushroom are in/on it.

Pierre van Rossum on Thursday, Feb. 23rd, 2023 at 8:10 AM

Please note that we're still tweaking the system. The average rating should now be around 6.5. There's probably too many 10s at Libero and too few at RS. I'm sure there's other stuff aswell. Again please shout if you see something that looks odd

Roger Mendonça on Thursday, Feb. 23rd, 2023 at 5:52 PM

Jonas Schiffer is only a Sophomore! That's not scary at all..

Roger Mendonça on Thursday, Feb. 23rd, 2023 at 5:53 PM

TEAM OF THE WEEK
Once again thank you to Roger for developing the Player Rating system.  Without it we would not be talking about team/player of the week.  And Max and I have been talking about it since season 1.  Roger did the heavy lifting with numbers/ranges so we can get a result (and he's still tweaking a little).  Thank you Roger!

The new front page I'm working on will have the team of the week. The new front page is not done yet so don't dwell on all facets of it yet (yes, I will put the Comments Wall back in because John lobbied me to and yes it is useful).  For this I'd like you to do two things:
1) Go here and focus on the bottom of the first column:
https://www.olmec.org/tmvl/index2.php

2) Post any feedback/comments on Team of the Week on this thread

I'd like to know:
a) what are your general comments?
b) do you have any suggestions for the 6 tabs you see (starting with TOTW)?
c) would you like to have a place to comment (perhaps just on the bottom of the TOTW tab; having a comment setup for all the tabs for this section would be too much for me).
d) do you want a "player of the week" per conference?  or would you prefer a "team of the week" per conference.  I can fit one of these two but maybe not both.
e) if CB has read this far is he happy that I've not asked him to do any math?

I'm asking for feedback to gauge additional updates.  I can't/won't use all feedback but I will consider all of it.

Allan Sellers on Friday, Feb. 24th, 2023 at 12:07 AM

A worthwhile addition to the game , it help myself as it will give a better insight into what makes teams successful

James White on Saturday, Feb. 25th, 2023 at 11:04 AM

Al, I really like the Top 10 players table in the test home page. However, I feel like I'd prefer the Conference Team of the Week if we can only have one.

Roger Mendonça on Saturday, Feb. 25th, 2023 at 12:33 PM

I love this idea. This is more fuel for the fish to perform at their absolute best! And also another way for their manager to complain about how Olmec hates him.

Rob Peterson on Sunday, Feb. 26th, 2023 at 4:06 PM

I've updated this (see the top of this page with a "Click here" to get to the team of the week stuff for now).

Roger: Hopefully this is what you had in mind.

Rob:  The A-Fish DO land an Oh on the SEC Team of the Week: Rafael Rocha.

Allan Sellers on Monday, Feb. 27th, 2023 at 1:10 AM

Better than I had in mind Al 😃

Roger Mendonça on Monday, Feb. 27th, 2023 at 8:25 AM

a) what are your general comments?
It's marvellous but appears to be lacking in Bulldog players

b) do you have any suggestions for the 6 tabs you see (starting with TOTW)?
There should be a 7th 'Bulldogs' tab

c) would you like to have a place to comment (perhaps just on the bottom of the TOTW tab; having a comment setup for all the tabs for this section would be too much for me).
Yes definitely. One comment section is enough.

d) do you want a "player of the week" per conference?  or would you prefer a "team of the week" per conference.  I can fit one of these two but maybe not both.
You can never have too much information...I'd probably prefer team of the week though

e) if CB has read this far is he happy that I've not asked him to do any math?
Despite my previous comments I am, in fact and as well as a tactical genius, a mathematical genius. Ask me anything. I can add stuff up and everything.
