Who was the unluckiest team in Season 9?  Here are my five nominees (in alphabetical order):

Antioch Anglerfish.  When Rob was favored by +5 or more, they went 14-2.  However, both those losses were two of the top 10 upsets of last season by player rating comparison, including the #2 overall (losing when at +11 over the opponent).  Further, when the 'Fish were favored at +4 or less, they went 0-16.  No close wins.  Didn't get gifted an upset all season.  In 5-set matches they went 1-4.

Columbia Crazy Tomatoes.  They suffered three upsets when rated at +5 or better, one of only two teams to lose 3 or more matches when favored by 5+.  They also couldn't get any Olmec love in tight contests, going 1-6 in 5-set matches, tied for the worst winning rate of any team playing in at least 3 of those, and the 4th worst overall after the teams that didn't even win one (Tucson 0-2, New Orleans 0-2, Albuquerque 0-1).

Quincy Rabid Biting Mules.  While their overall record was 19-15, they had to earn it the hard way.  Their win rate when favored was 78%, 6th-worst in the league.  Further, when competing in the closer matches (+7 to -7 difference in player ratings), they went a putrid 5-10, the worst win rate in competitive matches for the season.  Their biggest upset of the season came in at -4, a feat 20 other teams topped.

Sheboygan Vampire Bats.  John suffered the worst upset of the season, a +12 debacle.  In 5-set matches, they went 1-5, tied for 3rd-worst overall record behind the teams that went 1-6 (CCT & TT).  And the stake in the coffin was their win rate when favored.  No one fared worse when expected to win, with the Bats winning just 60% of the time (9-6).  Along with CCT, they were one of the only two teams to lose 3 or more matches when favored by +5 or higher in those clashes.  CCT at least pulled off two upsets when rated -5 or lower (2-7).  SVB went 0-8 in similar matches.

Tucson Spiking Saguaros.  They suffered a top 10 upset, losing when rated +9 per player better.  Additionally, they were the only team other than Antioch to not pull an upset all season, losing every match (0-16) when rated at -1 or lower.  Their overall win rate in close matches was 37%, barely above the anemic Mules.

Dishonorable mention: overall record was good, yet along the way they suffered a top 10 upset, were the only team to go 0-3 when rated evenly against the opponent, and was one of only three to not win a 5-set match all season, yours truly: the Swamp Rats.
