I prefer the top one, but was just wondering if ther was a way to show home team properly. I realise there are games played at neutral sites, but maybe they can be vs. 

Then you could have Team A @ Team B, to help make it clearer who's playing where

Matthew has a good idea -  "@" for games at a venue and "v" or "vs" for neutral gets a thumbs up from me.

Good observation.  Yes, you will see "@" or "at" when it is a home match for one team and "v" or "vs" for neutral.  Example below...

Why is the away team mentioned first? Is that the common way in USA? i am more used that the home team is mentioned first. But since the league is USA I will adapt.

Our standard is always:

away team at (@) home team

For whatever reason, the top/bottom arrangemeent seems more cluttered and disorganized than the side-by-side.

No big preference but agree top is slightly less cluttered

I like the top better. It's more easily discernable who the teams are. 

I went with the top one as well. I can't say exactly why. It's just an aesthetic reaction.
