Player Skill Potential
Posted by Allan Sellers on Sunday, Dec. 4th, 2022 at 10:57 PM

One of the aspects of this game that can be challenging is roster management.

You can look at your team and might think "will this roster ever get any better?".  Yes, it will!  However, it is not always clear how things will play out.

Taking this sample roster, can you tell by looking at it which players have the most potential?

I can.  But it would take me time to do some math, and all that and then I'd forget the next time I came back to the page.

Would it help on the roster if I did something like added a field between gr and xp and called it pt (for potential)?

So for the first player Thomas he would have something like:

ov gr pt xp

70 C+ B 5

Kordes might be

ov gr pt xp

61 D+ B- 6

What I would do is determine what the max number per skill would be starting with the current season going forward.

For Seniors, the potential is the same as the current grade.   It can't get higher.

For Juniors, I'd assume potential is if each skill was CP'd this season.

For sophomores, I'd assume potential is if each skill was CP'd this season AND their Junior season.

For freshman, I'd assume potential is if each skill was CP'd this season AND their Sophomore season AND their Junior season.

Would that be helpful for you all for decision making?

I think this is a good idea myself.

What wasn't a good idea was using CP on Mr Moore's SET skill ;-)

I'd also find it helpful Al.

Roger Mendonça on Monday, Dec. 5th, 2022 at 6:40 PM

Yes, somewhat useful, though I have a spreadsheet that does womething similar already

Paul Cockayne on Tuesday, Dec. 6th, 2022 at 11:24 AM

I've added this feature to (only) the Team Landing page. This is the "pt" standing for "Potential" column you will see in the top section of the page.

Bear in mind that this is a "potential" grade these players could get to.  And they ONLY get to it if they are grown to the maximum of their key skills.

Here are a couple of examples.

Baton Rouge

I doubt any team is better than the Baton Rouge Bananas with 8 players in the A-, A, or A+ range (2 sophomores are A+ potential).  Although Kevin is right behind with 7.

Cincinnati

Then there's Mr. James Tucker.  He "only" has 5 players in the A-, A, or A+ range. The key for that is 4 of them are Freshman.

The Hogs had a great recruiting class last season and that's where it pays off (eventually) as these players grow.

Keep in mind though that none of those players start as "A" level players.  They have to earn it with CP growth.

What can you takeaway from all of this?

Players at the A level will help your team in the big matches.  But they aren't easy to get (typically 5 star recruits).

Players at the B grade (especially B+) are key as well to both helping your team and depth at positions.

I think the main takeaway is to not focus on the "current grade" when making CP decisions but also the potential.  For me, somehow, I have 4 RS players.  My senior is great, but before seeing the potential, its not as clear if the Jr or Fr is better.  Well, the Freshman will be much better, so I have to stay focused on getting improvements in for him (and playing time to grow XPs).

Please let me know if this is useful for you and any initial thoughts on how you'll use it as you may have another angle or thought process.

i think this is certainly useful in helping you focus on the right players especially in making those tough choices with running out resources

Huge help to me, Al, thank you!

Mike Cabral on Wednesday, Dec. 7th, 2022 at 2:31 AM

Please stop helping people to beat me.

If everyone has to wing it, like I do, then I stand an even money chance of success.

Stop being helpful

Craig Bucknall on Wednesday, Dec. 7th, 2022 at 10:22 AM

Great work. Even though it shows me how bad my team will be in two years when my Juniors are gone.

Typical of Al to accidentally forget to.mention his team has 9 such A- to A+ potentials.

Steve Turner on Wednesday, Dec. 7th, 2022 at 8:55 PM

I'd like to thank Craig "Winging It" Bucknall for his feedback.  😎

Steve may be right that I intentionally, accidentally forgot to mention the statistics he notes...  😎

Maybe there could be a little symbol at the bottom of the column that confirms whether you're screwed.

Jason Halpin on Saturday, Dec. 10th, 2022 at 3:24 AM

This is FANTASTIC Al. This is something I've definitely felt would be a great help. I can kinda get a feel for how good players are going to be by their recruiting stars, but then you get the random skill assignment and suddenly a 5-star can become just an overpriced 3-star and it's sometimes hard to tell. This addition is SUPER helpful.

I do like knowing that Antioch has 6 potential A players (but no A+ players...).

Rob Peterson on Saturday, Dec. 10th, 2022 at 7:32 PM

This has been somewhat helpful for me as I navigate how lineups and training works.

Thanks Al

Thanks Jason, Rob, and Matt for the feedback.

Jason: Oh the symbol is there, you just have to look a little harder...😎

Rob: Thanks Rob!

Matt: That's great to hear!

Personally...

I LOVE THIS!  It really helps me focus where I should be putting my CP (and generating XPs) and where I should not...
