Quiz and Tutorial - Attacking (ATK)
Posted by Allan Sellers on Thursday, Mar. 10th, 2022 at 5:00 PM

Attacking Article created by Steve Turner

INTRODUCTION

Attacking is typically done by the OH, MB or RS. The Setter (S) can also get a kill but it is not very frequent.

The attack rating depends on the set rating and attacker's skill. Only 18, 14 and 10 attack skills shown here just to provide some different examples. Note that a player's attack skill is increased by 1 for home games. Attack rating can be 0 (poor) to 3 (excellent).

For each of the three categories below: Set 3 Rating, Set 2 Rating, and Set 1 Rating, each ATK SL has a chance to get an Attack 0-3 rating.

SET 3 RATING
ATK SL Attack 3 Attack 2 Attack 1 Attack 0
ATK 18 42% 45% 11% 2%
ATK 14 35% 42% 16% 7%
ATK 10 28% 37% 19% 16%

SET 2 RATING
ATK SL Attack 3 Attack 2 Attack 1 Attack 0
ATK 18 38% 43% 14% 4%
ATK 14 32% 40% 18% 10%
ATK 10 26% 36% 20% 19%

SET 1 RATING
ATK SL Attack 3 Attack 2 Attack 1 Attack 0
ATK 18 32% 40% 18% 11%
ATK 14 27% 37% 20% 17%
ATK 10 22% 32% 30% 25%

IN OR OUT?

Whether an attack is in or out depends on the player position, attack skill and attack rating.

Typically the best ATK ratings you will see are between 15-17. However there are rare situations where it can go much higher (up to 21). A 5-star recruit specializing in attack (with a max +2 for ATK) could start at 13 and be coached 6 times to reach 19. Fit can add 1 and playing at home another 1. Again, this is rare, but can happen.

Below is a listing of the chance for the attack to be in. Note that all percentages decrease by 1% for each attack (ATK) skill drop of 1.

Outside Hitter/Right Side
Attack 3: 100% at ATK 7 or above
Attack 2: 100% at 17 or above (another example: ATK 10 has a 93% chance)
Attack 1: 89% at 21 (another example: ATK 10 has a 78% chance)
Attack 0: 63% at 21 (another example: ATK 10 has a 52% chance)

Middle Blocker
Attack 3: 100% at 12 or above
Attack 2: 99% at 21 (another example: ATK 10 has a 88% chance)
Attack 1: 89% at 21 (another example: ATK 10 has a 78% chance)
Attack 0: 63% at 21 (another example: ATK 10 has a 52% chance)

Setter
- 99% chance at ATK 21 of the attack being in for the setter (ATK 10 Setter has 88%)

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE ATTACK IS IN?
If the attack is in we then check:
1) Is the attack blocked (see blocking tutorial)?
2) If not blocked, does the defense's back row dig the ball using their DEF skill?

If the ball is in, not blocked, and not dug, then it is a kill.
