Who Got Olmec'd?
Posted by Kevin Martin on Saturday, Jul. 30th, 2022 at 8:45 PM

When Al asked who got "Olmec'd" in an e-mail a short time ago, regarding whose incoming recruits were given the least of the random points possible, I gave this subject too much thought.  How would you measure that?  5-star Liberos only have 6 possible point ranges, while a 4-star OH have 14, so how is that fair to assess?  What about max, max+1, and max+2 players?  Does it matter how much they cost in RP?  What a fun question, Al!

Here is what I have settled on in order to share (with your opening weekend results) additional reasons to crow and lament and blame Olmec for your woes:
(% of maximum possible random skill points the player did not receive, out of the max random possible)*(cost in RP to recruit the player)

In other words, if your player could have gotten 8 possible additional random points above the minimum as a 4-star L, and you only got 6, that would be rated as 2 of 8, or 25% Olmec'd for the player.  Then multiply that by the total cost of RP you paid to get them, to see how badly Olmec decided to tax you.

Players you got for free cost you nothing so you don't get to complain.  You got what you paid for.  They don't count for Olmec'd points.

So we're clear, there were no "perfect players" this season who got every point possible, and there were no players who completed struck out.  A couple came close on both though, so to highlight those amongst us that Olmec has chosen to "favor":

Two players got within 1 point of perfection.  Ames' 4* MB Nicholas Crawford only fell one point short at Atk.  And Mat-Su's 3*(Max 1 blk) Setter fell only one point short as well, ironically at Set.

On the downside, three players only got 1 out of their possible points.  Burlington's 5* L Gabriel Dupuis (+1 Rcv) and Nashville's 5* L Gustavo Barboas (+1 Rcv).  While this makes me nervous about getting a 5* L this season, at least they got their point at their most critical skill.  Meanwhile, San Jose's Roberto Giordano takes the booby prize this season, as the 5* MB only picked up one point at Srv, where a L could serve for him anyway if needed.  Congrat's Vick!

Overall though, the most expensive "miss" went to Steve T. and Columbia's 5* MB (+1 Atk) recruit Emilio Gallo, who only got half of the possible random points at the price tag of 1493 RP.  Don't feel too bad for Steve though, even as Olmec tries to level the playing field and give the rest of us a fighting chance.  Gallo still starts out with a score of 60 and enters the league as a solid C player.  Columbia overall had the 2nd highest Olmec'd team score, at 1366 Missed Points * RP spent.

It should be noted that our commish has his cheat codes programmed backwards, as the perennial underdog Biting Mules came in 3rd in the team rankings at 1352, just behind Steve.

At the top of the list?  Mike C and Teutopolis got all twisted up.  They 'earned' a total of 1402 Olmec'd points by my calculating, and were the biggest losers of the random post-recruiting numbers for last season.  Out of 5 recruits players, the best luck he had was getting 6 of 9 possible points on his 3* MB Spencer Klein - who happens to be the player he picked up for 0 RP.  Of the four he paid for, only one fared better than getting half the possible points, and that was by a sole point: 4* OH Julian Weber (7 of 13 possible, even counting that he was a Max Atk player and those 2 were guaranteed!).

Got a reason why you got Olmec'd worse than Vick, Steve, or C-Ball?  Vote & comment below!

I knew it was bad but didn't realise we had the most expensive miss.

Further proof that recruiting is my achilles heel.

yes our recruits were woefully poor so it does not looks good for this year!

This is fantastic! Great read Kevin! Any chance you coul dpost the full results?

Olmec doesn't like me...

Allan Sellers on Sunday, Jul. 31st, 2022 at 11:01 PM

Well it was obviously DAL, I'm stunned there's even a poll.

All our recruits weren't maxed out = injustice.

OLMEC despises us.

Craig Bucknall on Monday, Aug. 1st, 2022 at 8:32 PM

For Rob, full results here.  Sorted by "Olmec'd Points" which again is based on what percent of points you did NOT get on a specific player, times the amount of RP you spent to be so "gifted" by Olmec.  More expensively recruited players thus weighed higher on the team-wide totals.  Also here though, I have listed out how many purchased recruits each team picked up, for how much total RP, and what the team-wide SL given vs. SL Max was for last season.  As a reminder, the free 3* each team could get, and the 1* freebies for new managers don't count.  You got what you paid for.

Olmec'd rank; Team; Olmec'd Points; Total RP spent; how many players were recruited with RP; then total team 'bonus' SL out of the total possible for the recruits, with a % listed.

(Of note for those curious: two teams tied for worst % of possible SL.  Antioch & Nashvilee at 12 of 33, 36.36%.  Olmec's favorite last season was Ames at 74.19%, 23 of 31, with Spokane coming in second at 70.59%, 12 of 17, though with only 2 recruits.)

This makes perfect sense.. Olmec is actively trying to keep me from winning.

Rob Peterson on Tuesday, Aug. 2nd, 2022 at 9:18 PM

Just handicapping you, Rob, so the rest of us have a fighting chance.
