S7 New Features // Call for Ideas
Posted by Allan Sellers on Sunday, Dec. 18th, 2022 at 11:12 PM

I'm looking for some feedback and ideas on additional features you'd like to see.  I'm not necessarily looking for adding new features to the simulator or updating the design at the moment.  I'm mainly looking for ideas/feedback on additions to the website.

Updated Viewer w/Positions on Court and Expanded Play by Play and Stats

One of the items I have in development is an updated viewer (likely another season or two of work) that will better show where your players are on the court and how their skills impact each play.  I'm still getting my head around this one from both a feature and technology perspective to make it work.  If you want to help me with this with ideas let me know and I'll include you as I think I may need some of that at this point.

Other items I have in my backlog to potentiall work are:

History between Teams

Add info that will show prior meetings and the record between two teams

Historical Player and Team Stats

Show stats and leaders from prior seasons for players and teams

Historical Standings and Competitions

Page to show this type of info similar to what we have in United:

https://www.olmec.org/mswl-united/history.php?type=42

Player of the Week / Team of the Week

Sometimes I think we can overlook amazing games from players and not highlight them as much as we should.

This idea could be something where we pick the best player(s) by position (1 L, 1 RS, 1 S, 2 OH, 2 MBs) and make a team of the week.  We could also just have an "offensive" and "defensive" player of the week, but frankly I think I prefer it by position as we can identify SPECIFIC stats that are key per position.  Maybe make it a 2-match (or more) requirement for a session to be considered.

I think highlighting players like this also helps us consider what makes a player good at the position and helps us all learn a bit.

This is an area where any one (or more) of you could come up with a design for me to code and I'd encourage you to consider it if you are interested (Max, I, and others can help with feedback on your design to tweak it as needed).

Recruiting

Anything to add to the webpages here?  Trashtalking about signing players BEFORE STEP 3 or something?

Player of the Year / Coach of the Year

For Player of the year maybe its just "team of the year" reusing some of the weekly ideas in Team of the Week?

For Coach of the Year maybe its a formula taking into account the skill of the team and the matches won (or matches plus titles)?  Some way to acknowledges coaches that did great things with less talent than some.

All Conference

Again - similar to the above.  We could have 1st and 2nd team all conference teams per conference.  Would need to decide if this is a "conference match only" type calculation or for all matches for the teams in a given conference.

Prediction League

If interested this could be done.

Player of the Match

Or Top 3?

Simulator Idea - Timeouts & Challenges

Momentum and pressure are big factors in a real match.  One thing that you'll see in real matches is a team winning some points in a row (or nearing 25 late in a set).  The opposing team will call timeout to try to "ice" the server and break their concentration.

And a % of the time, the team that serves next will serve it into the net or out to break the momentum.  Teams get 2 timeouts per set.

In theory, we could (possibly) add the ability in the orders for each match for you to select two times (per set) where you want to call a timeout like:

- lost 3 points in a row

- opposing team reaches 24

It would be rules used for each set (if applicable) for a given match.

Again, its a way to break a team's serve, get the ball back on your side to serve and try to get back in a set if you can (or slow down the opponent winning a set).  This does ratchet up the pressure so we'd need to develop a formula to reduce the chance of serve effectiveness after a timeout.

Challenges could be another idea (I think Timeout is a better place to start if we want to do it).  For challenges, a coach can challenge a call.   Like is the ball in or out.  Was there a touch on the block.  Was the attacker in the net.  Like timeouts we'd have to figure out how to apply it.  Two challenges per MATCH (not Set) I think is the rule. This has the effect of either overturning a call OR even if not it acts like a timeout and can ICE the opposing server.

Next Steps & Other Ideas?

I'd also be open to your ideas.  So if you've made it this far please do one (or more) of the following:

1) Comment on what you'd like to see from the above list (prioritize if if you want).

2) List other ideas I don't have

3) Offer to help with something (like the Team of the Week design)

Thanks!

Readers Comments

Would love to see the History as for United, especially now the seasons are building up.

For recruiting I would like a feature where I can hover over a teams Icon and get the number of RP they have, within the recruiting screens (or a table next to it!).  I occasionally spend some time opening team pages to get this information.  Also some comments on upcoming would open up some mind games opportunites ?

I like the idea of a momentum stopper for the Timeout.

One idea following Bryce's video last week a "Commitment" addition  - where you can dial up a player but at the risk of injury/fitness loss?

Happy to help - but skillset limited!

James Tucker on Monday, Dec. 19th, 2022 at 9:04 AM

Would welcome the history, the pre-recruitment trash talking and the prediction league.

Not sure about the timeout unless there was also a downside to doing it - otherwise doesn't it just become a standing order for everyone? That said, some additional tactical options to enable more in game shenanigans would be excellent. GPPs perhaps? Or commitment as James suggests.

Also happy to help - nothing coding related though...or anything involving numbers.....that would not work out well

Roger Mendonça on Monday, Dec. 19th, 2022 at 6:55 PM

That timeout comment came across more negatively than I intended. I think it's a great idea but there should also be a reason not to do it. Happy to have a think about what that could be.

Roger Mendonça on Monday, Dec. 19th, 2022 at 7:11 PM

I like the idea of a team of the week with the teams of winning players getting an extra CP per player.

John Holden on Monday, Dec. 19th, 2022 at 7:13 PM

I also like a Team of the Week idea and maybe for Coach of the Year we put it to a vote?

In other ideas. What about a transfer portal like the NCAA now has at the end of the season? Like players that don't play a minimum number of sets get to leave a team through the transfer portal to find some playing time. I imagine the threshold would go up by class, like a Freshman that doesn't play 5% of sets and scale up to a junior that doesn't play at least 15% of sets would have the opportunity to leave for another school. Then teams that still haven't filled their Recruiting needs by the end of the season could use RPs to bid in the transfer portal before going to the free recruits? And then any recruits that don't get bid on stay with their current school.

Bryce Kalmbach on Monday, Dec. 19th, 2022 at 9:50 PM

I do like Bryce's idea about the transfer portal.

I think I mentioned this somewhere else but what about some way of if teams get a certain number of 4 or 5 star players during recruiting during a season that they can't bid on any more until other teams have had a chance to get some.

I understand it does also come down to saving and using recruiting points...which I definitely need to work on 😁😁

You should be able to win things in real life if you win things in the game. Like maybe a raccoon hat. Or a chameleon hat. Or a tomato hat...

John Holden on Tuesday, Dec. 20th, 2022 at 11:30 PM

I agree with Roger about timeouts. It's a good idea in theory, but to make it valuable in practice, there should be a cost. Maybe it could be a literal cost. For example, maybe if you lose the point after the timeout, you lose 1 CP. I haven't thought that through, so maybe it's a horrible idea, but I think there should be some risk, since sometimes in real life, those timeouts backfire (sometimes spectacularly).

Jason Halpin on Wednesday, Dec. 21st, 2022 at 3:03 AM

I love all of the things that Al mentioned. Especially the Historical stats and the Team/Player of the week stuff.

Rob Peterson on Saturday, Dec. 24th, 2022 at 2:33 AM

It's a huge coding pain, but I would enjoy having additional control over tactics, like where to send a set, or which way to block (cross or line). Right now, serve order is really the only tactical decision we as coaches make, other than whether to use T7 or sprinkle in our B-teams. It would be nice to be able to anticipate the other side having a star player, and do my best to avoid involving them in a play, by hitting away from them. Or to have a defensive shift where we could hide one of our lowest REC passers if certain conditions are met.

Mike Halpin on Saturday, Dec. 24th, 2022 at 6:09 PM

I think tactics are the biggest thing missing from the game at the moment. There's more tactical control in even MSWL...

John Holden on Tuesday, Dec. 27th, 2022 at 3:27 AM

What me and Al are thinking is to start creating a tactic for focus on setting a certain position more and to counteract that blocking a certain position more. These tactics will have different affects as it has your best attacker hit more but this player has a higher chance of getting blocked especially if the other team chooses to block that position more. However, if the opposing team chooses to block that position and if the setter sets a different position it has a better chance of it not being blocked.

We will start with that, but other ideas for the future include serving a certain player more and it more often serves it that player if the server is good. Also, there is another idea to not have a certain player pass.

Also, for blocking line or cross, we will try to implement it in the future as well.

Thanks for the input! Banana King Mike.

The latter part of this discussion reminds me of when Al asked me whether I'd be interested in making the switch from United to TMVL. Not knowing anything at all about volleyball I watched a 'How to Play' YouTube video. This is really simple I thought - so when the algorithm offered me another video on 'Volleyball Tactics' I hubristically thought I'd watch that too and give myself a real head start 🤓. About two minutes in, my mind was blown 🤯 and I realised this is a game with real depth - none of which I understand. So while I'd welcome the introduction of new tactics, can I make a plea that they be accompanied by Al's really helpful videos 😁

I do not need more tactical choices.

I am already winging it as we all know.

It will make my already random selections even more random.....or exactly the same...it's one of those

Love the logos.

Tabs are fine and I have fat fingers myself - maybe put Recruiting in the left column.

Font for the Blog is too big - I use my phone and have to zoom in anyway so a smaller font is good.

Roger Mendonça on Tuesday, Jan. 17th, 2023 at 12:21 PM

I'm sure I posted that last comment before Christmas.  Al - Is this your subtle way of reminding me I said I'd think about something and then went quiet?  If so, I confess I have nothing better than Jason's suggestion.

Roger Mendonça on Tuesday, Jan. 17th, 2023 at 7:40 PM

Ha!  No Roger it must have come through as a double post (not sure why, but seems to happen for others if they're on a prior tab and click refresh).

Quick note that Roger and I are making good progress on Team of the Week info.  We will hopefully have more to share soon.

Jason has a good thought on the plusses and minuses of adding something like timeouts.  My viewable take on real matches has been:

a) Sometimes the timeout freezes the server (more than you'd think) or slows down the oppositions momentum)

b) Sometimes it has no impact

c) Never calling a timeout is usually worse than calling one.

Maybe somehow integrate it into being used like NFL timeouts where if you challenge a call (also like a timeout) and it doesn't work you still lose the point and also lose the timeout.

Anyway, we'll come back to this all at some point.

Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Jan. 17th, 2023 at 10:42 PM

Actually, this exchange did trigger one minor suggestion based on Jason's proposals. If we go down the path of timeouts having a cost, I'd use RPs rather than CPs.  CPs seem too valuable to pay 1 for a single timeout.  Whereas 1 RP per timeout is not significant but the prospect of, say, using 100 over the course of the season should be enough to make you pick and choose when you'd use them.

Roger Mendonça on Wednesday, Jan. 18th, 2023 at 11:50 AM

I like the idea of timeouts, but I imagine it will be very hard to indicate when to use one. It'd be a highly conditional situation.
