This is not a thread about how Mrs. Sellers is a little more than 12 months older than me. So at times she's 2 years older than me and I like to point that out and am usually in trouble for a week.
This is not about that...
I think one of the best strategies for recruiting for Libero, Setter, and Right Side is a 2 year gap between highly skilled players. I think that's applicable to OH/MB but maybe you 3D chess people can help me learn that one. What's my point? My point is that having a little gap between stars allows one to shine while you build the other one (think play the star 2 matches a session and the understudy 1; so like playing The Emperor 2 matches and Darth Vader 1 a session).
Of course NONE of my positions (L, S, RS at least) are setup like that. Some really good examples though are:
ALTON
SAN JOSE
CINCI (L and S; skip Hendricks))
PEKIN
BURLINGTON
What do you think? Do you think this is a good strategy or am I crazy? Does it kinda/sorta apply to the OH and MB positions (try to have SOLID Fr/Jr or So/Sr combos)?
Have you thought about this too? Please share your thoughts.

That does sound interesting, maybe it's something I might try once I get used to lineups and recruiting.

This is something I try to do but have never managed to get the Liberos 2 years apart. Also you don't want to have all 3 at sat So/Sr because you'll have 3 retiring atbthe same time and probably have retiring OH and MB.

I'd be wary of any strategy which can be illustrated by referencing Pekin

This is what I'm aiming for....and three decent OH & MB out of the four.

So just being random with recruiting and trying to be lucky might not work out?
That's my strategy.
Maybe it needs rethinking!

Luck definitely helps but if we look at Cincinnati over the last 3 seasons they've recruited nine 5 star players and one 3 star apart from their walk ins.
Looking at Denali you've recruited a lot of 3-4 stars but only three 5 stars. You can get lucky 1-2 times with the dice skill levels but overall it looks like you need to go big to compete

This is what I strive to do with L / S / RS. There was one season I messed up and DIDN'T do it with my RS and I suffered for a couple of seasons after as a result.
I have also figured out that you CANNOT coach all of your players, so I'm starting to develop recruiting strategies surrounding that philospohy.

Im just glad we are doing something right even if just by luck, thanks for the insight into both subjects :-p

I did not do this for my current RS, so I have a Senior and a Freshman. We'll be OK this year, but next year that will be a definite weak spot for me.
