FINAL SEASON OPENER
Posted by Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Jan. 14th, 2025 at 12:11 AM

Thursday (Jan 16) is the final season volleyball opener for Max.  We thought he played his last match in April 2024 but he was able to come back for a 5th season (due to a Covid year rules).

Anyway, I'll try to post some things here from time to time about the season and how "your creator's" college team is doing.

Here's a link to the Augustana Mens Volleyball landing page:

https://athletics.augustana.edu/sports/mens-volleyball

You might see some photos from your commissioner...

The first match is at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin (the beautiful state capitol of Wisconsin).  We lived there for 2 years.

Here's a link to the match video (Thursday Jan 16 7pm CT):   https://edgewoodcollegeeagles.com/watch/?Archive=2691&type=Live

Last season Amy and I made it to all 24 matches.  Everything is 4 hours+ away from our home except one match (only 2 hours away...yay!).  This season we'll try to do the same for the 25 matches if we can.

Augie is in the "receiving votes" portion of the poll (there are about 125 Division III teams):

Go Augie! Cool to see a local school, Rutgers-Newark, on there, too.

I get receiving votes all the time in TMVL. It's not a bad place to be. I hope the season goes really well!

Good start to the season đŸ‘Œ

Nice opening night win.  Back in action later on Saturday night.

Allan Sellers on Saturday, Jan. 18th, 2025 at 2:10 PM

This is a backrow attack by the OH.  The red line is the 10 feet line that players attacking from the back row have to jump before attacking the ball.  So he's nearly halfway into the net from the 10 foot line as he jumped with momentum going forward.

Allan Sellers on Saturday, Jan. 18th, 2025 at 2:13 PM

Max seems a long way forward forum a libero.

On an attack for the offense the libero (and others in the back row) may move forward into the front row for "block coverage".   The idea is that  typically a block by the defense will land in the front row so anyone can dig it at that point.  So this is another way to get a dig (off an opposition blocked ball).

Allan Sellers on Saturday, Jan. 18th, 2025 at 11:10 PM

See, I knew that*,. Maybe another future addition to TMVL?

Another good win yesterday.

*not really. Thanks, Al.

Steve Turner on Sunday, Jan. 19th, 2025 at 10:00 AM

Ha!  Yes Steve.  I'll have to ask Max about how he factors that in.  Essentially a dig off a block.

Okay, here's a fun photo from last night.  THIS is called a NET VIOLATION.  Most times its a touch of the net and not a:

GRAB THE NET WITH ONE HAND AND ALSO TRY TO FLOSS YOUR TEETH WITH THE NET...

Allan Sellers on Sunday, Jan. 19th, 2025 at 5:19 PM

Very nice action photos, Al. Thanks for sharing.

Brian Beerman on Monday, Jan. 20th, 2025 at 1:50 PM

What exactly happened there with the net violation? Was he recovering from a dig under the net and trying to go up for the block in the same motion?

Jason Halpin on Monday, Jan. 20th, 2025 at 4:40 PM

I doubt this is the actual scenario, but I picture Blue #24 coming in to block a quick set to#10 or someone out of shot, but getting there late and jumping into the net while the ball was actually set to #5.

Mike Halpin on Monday, Jan. 20th, 2025 at 10:57 PM

This is the photo right before the one above in the sequence.  It looks like he got his right hand under the white tape and through the netting as he was jumping to block.

Ryan (#5) is an OH and the backrow attacker on this play (I think this is called a "Bic").  I think you are probably right Mike.

I think you are right too Jason.   Probably had his hands too far towards our side under the net when he jumped.

These are terrific, keep em coming!

Mike Cabral on Wednesday, Jan. 22nd, 2025 at 2:06 PM

In totally unrelated news, the Rabid BITING Mules have announced interest in recruiting a player off the Westminster roster for the upcoming season.  Something about 'raw, yet undeniable mandibular talent!"

Kevin Martin on Wednesday, Jan. 22nd, 2025 at 3:09 PM

Man the Vikings brothers are in every photo somehow

John Holden on Wednesday, Jan. 22nd, 2025 at 9:49 PM

yes that number 24 is clearly set for life as a mule

Vick Hall on Friday, Jan. 24th, 2025 at 12:08 PM

Great photos! Keep em coming!
