Season 3 - Quiz 4: Boxscore Analysis
Posted by Allan Sellers on Wednesday, Sep. 1st, 2021 at 11:23 PM

This quiz is a little more cerebral.

This is a mini-boxscore from a real women's college game this past Saturday.  Kansas State at Nebraska.  I don't know if Josh has yet had a chance to attend a volleyball match at Nebraska (if so would love to hear your comments Josh) but they have a big gym and they sellout often.

Anyway, we all talk a bit about getting Olmec'd when the numbers go against us, but how do you think Nebraska felt in Set 4 down 15-9 after winning set 1 easily and a close set 2 (oh and Nebraska is ranked #4 in the USA).

Nebraska played ugly in set 3 or K-State just dominated.  Nebraska eventually recovered in set 4 to win, but it was a rough second half of the match.

I think you will see TMVL matches like this too.  We have skills that are in play and they evaluate every touch (or lack thereof) on each ball.  At times, teams will get hot and play over their heads (see Kansas and their .556 attacking pct in set 3).  Also at times teams will play horribly (see K-State in set 1 or Nebraska in set 3).

I mean look at K-State in set 3.  They had ZERO attacking errors (which we would translate as "Olmec loves Steve Turner" type numbers).

The reality for Nebraska (in my opinion) was their all-american setter was injured/out.   The freshman setter did well sets 1 and 2 but then struggled in set 3.  Set 4 seemed to be a combo of that setter plus another backup and in the end they got the job done.

The bottom line is that while playing a solid lineup usually results in success (a B+ team should beat a C- team easily right?), the reality is that sometimes in our game and in real life things go a little haywire and what looks like an easy match results in something more like this.  Which team do you think had the B+ in this equation?

Quincy Attack New Orleans
K E TA PCT SET PCT TA E K
13 2 19 .579 1 -.182 22 9 5
14 7 32 .219 2 .433 30 2 15
17 0 21 .810 3 .120 25 4 7
13 7 34 .176 4 .156 32 5 10
7 4 17 .176 5 .235 17 3 7

SET SCORES   1 2 3 4 5   TEAM RECORDS
Quincy (3) 25 23 25 23 15   4-3
New Orleans (2) 12 25 9 25 12   3-4

Okay, onto the quiz.  There will be no wrong answers this week.

My impression has been, in watching our local college team play, is that after winning the first two games a team sends out subs for the third and the scoring gets all wonky.

I must say that I just loved to see Sweden women play in the Euros last weeks.

Worst ranking before the championship started and still made it to quarters where Netherlands were to hard.

Especially the win against Bulgaris in the last-16 was great. A five-hour-thriller over five sets.

Isabelle Haak really stands out.

That's cool Christer that you saw some matches.   I don't recall if you were really familiar with volleyball before TMVL.

Did anything from our league help you watch (like positions/skills)?
