Maximum RPs to Sign A Player
Posted by Allan Sellers on Wednesday, Jul. 12th, 2023 at 7:32 PM

In the Soccer/Football league we have auctions and managers can set a limit for how much they will spend in a given auction.

We have the same feature in TMVL.

We encountered an issue this week where Phil's number was set to 0 in the database.  That's why you saw some results like this:

I investigated and found 0 for the Maximum RPs to spend.  That's why his bids were all lowered to 0.

Phil couldn't recall updating that field.   I checked the database at the time to see if we had any other issues.  All values were ALWAYS set to 2000.  So no one had adjusted them and thankfully there wasn't a trend of perhaps 0's by accident.

Who among us has not clicked on the wrong thing by accident or mistakely put in a value they didn't notice.  It happens.

On the opposite side of that I believe Roger (this season or last) mentioned that he lost out on (or nearly did) a player due to the 2000 RPs (default) maximum being there.

My questions to the league are:

1) Do you use this feature or plan to in the future (or would use it now that you know about it)?

2) Or do you think it is so rarely used that it might be safer to eliminate it altogether?

We do have the ability to say: If I get Lot 1, I do not want Lot 3 for example with the checkboxes.

In summary, I have no problem leaving this in place.  However, I don't want to keep something that isn't used and could cause others to mistakenly get a 0 in the box.

Hi Al, I would be happy to remove the limit entirely as I'm not sure it adds anything to the game but I wouldn't object if it stays because others rely on it regularly.

It was last session that the limit tripped me up.  I had clocked the rule before, but as it was the first time in 3 and a bit seasons that it's been an issue, I'd forgotten it existed. I wouldn't have won the bid anyway so no harm done as far as I'm concerned.

I can see a case where it might be useful. I have used the feature in the MSWL Leagues but not in TMVL. In fact I had not even noticed it was in TMVL until Roger mentioned it so maybe it is not so useful in TMVL for some bizarre volleyball related reason!

I haven't used this feature since I've entered TMVL, but that's more because I never have had more than 2000 RP's if I'm correct. I think there are other ones to arrange the bids, so for me it could me removed.

Pierre van Rossum on Thursday, Jul. 13th, 2023 at 4:23 AM

I use it in MSWL occasionally, but have not done so in TMVL because the recruiting process means you are only going to be bidding on 2 or 3 players max per session.  Plus there is the other tool to use.  I don't mind if it is removed.

James Tucker on Thursday, Jul. 13th, 2023 at 7:39 AM

I've never used it in United except by accident when I cleared the box.

I've never used it in TMVL but can see a situation  where I might: I'm bidding on two Liberos and in the second one there's only me and say Dallas. I only want one Libero but if my 1200 RP bid gets the first one and I uncheck the box, then Dallas gets their Libero at minimum price. So I could say bid 1200 RP on the first and 1000 RP on the second but have a maximum RP spend of 1800 so I at least make Dallas pay 601 RP.

Steve's suggested use case aside, I don't think the Max RP field is particularly helpful.  I've never used it.

Jason Halpin on Thursday, Jul. 13th, 2023 at 2:51 PM

I've always been aware of the limit, but it doesn't imapct me. Unlike SOME people who have RPs to burn, I take my initials seriously and don't just make it rain RPs whenever I can (I hope this tongue in cheek sarcasm comes off in the way I intend).

But seriously, I love the ability to limit the expenditures horizontally (If I win Lot one, don't bid on Lot three, etc). I don't use the Max field personally.

Rob Peterson on Thursday, Jul. 13th, 2023 at 3:17 PM

Al, may I suggest simply adding a line of code to ignore the box if it's equal to zero in the future, since that's an obvious mistake.

SOLVED ?

Thank you for all the feedback!   I appreciate all the responses and it helps me gauge usage.

It sounds like most of you aren't using this feature but there may be an occasion to do so.  So leaving it in place may be somewhat helfpul.

I like John's concept but I don't want to touch the Java code for processing things as then I have to spend a bunch of time testing.

What I can do is this...

SOLUTION

If a teams changes result in there being a 0 in the Max RPs box I will reset it to 2000.

So on the off chance that it happens (I tested and if I mistakenly blank it out or just put in something like "x" then it converts it to 0), I'll just change it to 2000.  A PHP webpage change is more straightforward for me for this update.

Any objections to this approach?

Allan Sellers on Thursday, Jul. 13th, 2023 at 10:40 PM

Sounds sensible. I note in MSWL the default is quite high at 5000, so maybe increase the default here to 3000?
