TMVL Off Topic - Best 3 Concerts
Posted by Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Nov. 22nd, 2022 at 1:43 AM

Putting on my "Craig Bucknall Gift of Gab" hat...

If you are interested (and I already know or think I do the artist C-Ball will choose) please post the 3 favorite concerts you attended in person and why...

1. U2 - Savvis Center (now Enterprise Center) - 11/28/2001  - St. Louis MO

This was right after 9/11 in the US.  The victims of the attack on New York, DC, and Pennsylvania were shown on a rolling list above the band.

Where the Streets Have No Name had the same red background lights from the Tempe AZ "Rattle and Hum" performance from Tempe AZ (where I am about to go again).  I was on the floor with my uncle, very close to the stage.  It was awesome.

2. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band -  11/15/84 - Checkerdome (St. Louis Arena) - St. Louis MO

My first real concert.  In a place that no longer exists (it was demolished).  This is where the St. Louis Blues played hockey (back in the day).  An amazing old venue.  An amazing 4-hour concert.

3. Farm Aid - 9/22/85 - Champaign, IL

I was a freshman in college at the U of I in Champaign and my dorm was right next to the concert.  It was an amazing experience.   An all-day concert.  I thought I'd be going to these the rest of my life.  But this has been the only one.

The highlights for me:

John Mellencamp

Neil Young

Willie Nelson

Tom Petty

Van "Hagar" (Halen)

and more...

Saw Blur at Madison Square Garden, Sufjan Stevens Come On Feel The Illinoise tour, and Super Furry Animals on the US Super Tuesday in 2008 where you could vote on a song which would then be in their set list (the one I voted for lost. I was sad. A group of guys went nuts though when their song won)

Only "big" concert I've been to was Bon Jovi in Sydney, Australia in 2018. Unfortunately his voice wasn't as good as what it was back in the day. And apparantly getting worse.

Matthew Fowler on Wednesday, Nov. 23rd, 2022 at 4:36 AM

Bon Jovi

Billy Joel

I've seen both of those guys multiple times, later in their careers, so their voices weren't were they used to be. But still A-MAZING.

Third on the list was a surprising FREE concert I saw at a tech conference in Vegas...

Fall Out Boy!

Rob Peterson on Wednesday, Nov. 23rd, 2022 at 4:01 PM

I'll agree Rob, yes Jon's voice wasn't great but the whole concert experience was awesome

Matthew Fowler on Wednesday, Nov. 23rd, 2022 at 10:44 PM

Not much of a concert goer, but here we go.

Loved Squeeze in London for my first concert.

Loved being taken with the whole family to see Allo Darlin' and their last ever gig with my girlfrirend's sister and brother in law.

But my most ever enjoyable was a freeish one at Warwick University.  They used to do an evening called the Whip round, where you paid what you thought the band was worth (usually nothing).  Sultans of Ping FC played,  everyone was in the right mood and we had a cracking night.  And we paid about 50 pence each!  If you have never heard them try Where's My Jumper for a flavour of their slightly odd ball take to life.

"Dancing at the Dicso bumper to bumper, wait a minute, where's my jumper, where's my jumper!"

James Tucker on Thursday, Nov. 24th, 2022 at 1:24 PM

Well, I'm a jazz fan.

Number one would be Keith Jarrett, solo piano in London, maybe 2015?  He just got better and better as the evening went on

Number two Miles Davis, also in London I think, 1975 perhaps.  Mesmerising.

And number three I have to mention the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the late 1960s, just because I saw him

But there are many, many others....

Paul Cockayne on Thursday, Nov. 24th, 2022 at 4:48 PM

Best 3 Concerts. now that is a hard one. so many good ones, but I will go perhaps with the three most memorable.

Watching U2 in Dublin when I was a teenager just after they had released Boy in Ireland. The venue was only tiny and the local haunt of my cousin John who I was visiting. No-one had heard of U2 back in england at the time and I was blown away with the music and took boy with me back to UK so all my friends could listen to it.

Second memorable concert was catching Gilli Smyth of Planet Gong at one of the small bar venues at Warwick Uni when I was doing my MSc. I never thought I would get the chance to see her perform live so this was a real treat and getting to chat with her afterwards. She even invited me to go and join her on her commune which I think was in Dorset or thereabouts at the time. However it did not quite fit in with my plans at the time, although I often wondered.....

Lastly was the infamous L7 gig in Highbury where drummer Dee Plakas was raffled off on your entrance ticket for a one night stand in the tour bus. I made sure I had my friends entrance ticket aswell, but sadly neither ticket proved lucky. It was a crazy mad gig though when they were probably at their peak. Saw them many several years later again in London and they were still brill. Donita Sparks did some interesting little covid period podcasts which were fun to watch lat at night in those dull lockdown days.

The three concerts I have attended that I remember best are two and a festival.

1 Kent Tele2-Arena Stockholm, Sweden 2016-12-17
Kent was by far my favourite band. They had decided to end there careers 2016 after 26 years. This was their final concert ever and I was able to get tickets. I remeber waiting by the computer to book them at realese. They were sold out within 20 minutes. And me and my wife got two (each, we inveted our friends aswell). I was not alone to cry when this concert was over. They were a great live-band. I saw them 7 times.

2 Kent Hartwall Arena Helsinki Finland 2016-10-28
The same tour as above but this time in Finland. Kent were big in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark. They sang in swedish so they never reached the big worldstage. They tried to translate two albums to english but the lyrics was not as good. Loved this concert too, but Stockholm was much better.

3 Hultsfredfestival, Hultsfred, Sweden 1997-06-12 to 1997-06-14
My and four friends from university worked at the festival. We borrowed a military tent to sleep in. Our job was to guide the bands to what scene they were playing at. The biggest international bands were Suede (UK), Prodigy (UK), Rage against the machine (USA), Wu-Tang Clan (USA) and Rammstein (France). We had passes for backstage and met a few artists. But only swedish, the international artists did their gig and left for the hotel. Biggest concert for me was Electric Banana Band. They were from a very popular childrens TV Show from 1980. Just when I was young and here they played with all rock-stars. Everyone in the audience knew their lyrics. Very memorable.

Well, I can't ignore that 'gift of the gab' gauntlet that Al has thrown without answering....

Despite enjoying music generally I'm not really a live music attendee to be honest although I have seen a fair bit and so my top 3 would be these:

1) The Prodigy - saw them at V Festival in Leeds a looooong time ago, 1997 I think it was. They had to stop mid-set because of the crush at the front. RIP Keith

2) Keane - saw them at Scarborough (an open air venue) recently and it absolutely threw it down. Got soaked despite having one of those plastic poncho things

3) Cumbawamba - only on here because they were the first live band I saw so I remember it pretty well. It was many, many years before Tubthumping and it was in some dark and dingy club in Manchester.

Craig Bucknall on Saturday, Nov. 26th, 2022 at 10:18 AM

I've been to a lot of concerts, so my list of the best ones changes often. Here are three I'd put at the top of the list at the moment:

1) Bruce Springsteen at Metlife Stadium (New Jersey), September 22, 2012. We got to the stadium very early to get in line for the stadium floor, which was general admission. At about 5 p.m., a band of thunderstorms moved through, so they brought all of the general admission folks inside the stadium, where we sat on a ramp for 5 hours. The show didn't start until 10:30 p.m., but because Bruce is who he is, he played for four hours. Bruce's birthday is September 23, so at midnight they brought out a birthday cake and the whole stadium sang happy birthday. One of the most fun shows I've ever been to, and definitely the most memorable.

2) Muse at Webster Hall (New York City), November 9, 2004. This was during the Absolution tour. Muse wasn't really big in the United States yet. Although they obviously went on to headline arena and stadium shows here, this show was at a 1,500-person ballroom in lower Manhattan. The energy that the band and the crowd brought for this show was incredible. Just an electric atmosphere.

3) Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem at Randall's Island (New York City), October 6, 2007. LCD Soundsystem is probably my favorite band to see live. They put on a massive dance party everywhere they go. Arcade Fire has boundless, chaotic energy. Whoever had the idea to combine them in a co-headlining tour was a genius.

Jason Halpin on Monday, Nov. 28th, 2022 at 6:14 PM

1. Grateful Dead in Bonner Springs, KS, July 4th, 1990 Great show at an outdoor amphitheatre but ridiculously hot weather, Jerry was solid that day and Bobby sounded awesome. Really nice US Blues encore. Brent was still alive.

2. Dropkick Murphys 2017 Tempe, AZ - the first of 3 times I've seen Murphys and the best of the shows. Small club with great sound but packed in shoulder to shoulder. The boys brought it hard.

3. Rolling Stones on their Tattoo You tour (1981ish?) at Meadowlands Arena, NJ. Jagger was in great shape, everyone was still relatively young(er), great sound. Tina Turner joined Mick on stage for Brown Sugar.

Mike Jaffe on Friday, Dec. 2nd, 2022 at 1:51 PM

Craig - saw Keane in Brighton once before I really knew anything about them and wow they were brill and one of my favorite bands now

Vick Hall on Monday, Dec. 5th, 2022 at 3:49 PM

I'm with Matt. I much prefer smaller intimate venues than the big stadium experience. That said, I'll put U2 at Wembley Stadium in 1987 in my top three. I went with a group of friends from sixth form college, one of the last things we did together before going to University. It was the Joshua Tree tour so perhaps creatively in the middle between Vick and Al's experiences?

Pele/Amsterdam at Wolverhampton's Slade Rooms was an experience. Incredible live band and the first concert I went to with my wife. Found myself moshing next to Miles from the Wonderstuff in the very small audience.

Something completely different for my final one. Tim Minchin in Northampton. Superb performer and greatly underrated as a musician. I remember he tried to convince the audience that he was born in Northampton. No one believed him - we all assumed he said that everywhere as part of his schtick, but apparently it's true. He did seem quite put out with the audience's reaction!

Roger Mendonça on Monday, Dec. 5th, 2022 at 6:37 PM

Memorial Day 2022, Las Vegas: The Eagles

July 6 and 7, 1984, Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City: Michael  Jackson Victory Tour

July 1990, Columbia, MO: Rich Mullins.

Phil McIntosh on Thursday, Dec. 15th, 2022 at 12:48 AM

Vick - yeah they were good at Scarborough, was just the weather that was bad....I don't mind a bit of rain but it was very, very wet. Bedshaped is one of my favourite tunes despite being melancholic

Craig Bucknall on Thursday, Dec. 15th, 2022 at 11:31 AM

Greta topic! I am a huge Springsten fan, so I am glad to see E Street well represented here. Here are mine:

1) Springsteen, 1/24/85, Providence, RI. 7 days before before my 18th birthday, and the night that unleashed my passion for Bruce and music/shows for the rest of my life. Usual Bruce craziness, long show, huge energy. And one of those Briuce moments...the show was over, lights were up, roadies were breaking down the stage...suddenly, he's back up there, playing unamplified while the roadies scramble to plug back in, band trailing behind. Pure magic

2) Springsteen, 8/15/12, Fenway Park, Boston. Bandied about in Bruce circles as perhaps his greatest US stadium show ever. Wide ranging and loose show, and there's just something about seeing a show at Fenway.  Thunder Road on just piano to open the show (holy grail for Bruce fans, had not been done in the US since the 70s) set the tone for a night where everything just felt right, lots of rarites and classics, and just that magic feel all night.

3) This slot is certainly another Bruce show for me, but I will throw something else in. I see a lot of smaller shows these days, and there's a completely different thing going on at intimate shows in small spaces. It's hard to put one of these over the others, since they all take on their own feel. The first time I felt this was at a pub show seeing Ellis Paul (Boston folk/ singer) in the late 90's. I'd really only been to arena shows up to that point, so it kind of took my breath away. I've seen hundreds since then, mostly recently Pokey Lafarge about two weeks in a great 300 seat venue right by my house. He owned the room and was a blast, his band was terrific.

Some excellent posts here.  I've awarded myself the "CB Social Interaction Trophy" by starting this thread.

I was an admitted and card-carrying musical snob in the 80s and 90s, to be fair, but I'm better now.

A few that reasonated with me.

I think Bon Jovi would be fun.

I like Squeeze.

The hometown of Miles Davis is 20 minutes away.  Very cool.

Thumbs up to Vick seeing U2 in Dublin, especially early on.  Impressive!

I LOVE the Christer story of the 1997 festival! Wu-Tang!

I remember the Prodigy Fire Starter video.

I think I would like Keane.  I remember heading a song.

I love Jason's Springsteen story and I love Arcade Fire.  I have not seen them live but would like to and all the 27 different instruments they play!

I wish I had seen a Dead concert.

I did see Rolling Stones (long drive) back in the very late 80s/early 90s but not in as cool a setting as Dr. Jaffe!

Wow U2 at Wembley!

I like the Eagles now I think.  That would be a fun concert.  I remember being in KC I think (when my relatives lived there) when tickets were on sale for "The Victory" tour for The Jacksons.  But I'm not as cool as Phil.

C-Ball.  Yes, expecting ALL Springsteen here!  :-)  I know you've seen MANY great shows Mike.

Now where do I pickup my CB Social Interaction Trophy?
