Rules Suggestions
Posted by Andy Bate on Tuesday, Feb. 2nd, 2010 at 12:34 PM

Here are a few short rules ideas for peeps to mull over.

Guaranteed Attack
Every team always gets one attack added to whatever total they earn from the outfield areas.

Penalty Chance
The 5% chance of giving away a penalty always applies.  If you play hardness then each point is a separate additional 10% chance of giving away another penalty.  (Otherwise I feel that one hardness point on your GK is the way to go.)

Playing For a Draw
Attacks gained by a team's FW when playing for a draw are multiplied by three quarters, those from the MF are multiplied by a half and those from the DF are multiplied by one quarter.  (Aimed at making PFD slightly more attractive than I suspect it is now.)

Sweeper
To make SW more of a specialist position the penalty for playing OOP as a SW is increased by one level.  The penalty for a SW playing as a DF is changed to be only SL-1 (playing at MF and FW are the same penalty as currently).

Physio
A physio can only work on one player each game - highest level player automatically chosen, ties broken in favour of a team's weakest (or strongest?) area.  Might make teams have more than one physio, increasing demand for BRBs.  (I’m not so sure of this one any more, thinking it might be a bit fiddly.  This is why it isn’t in the other thread, but having mentioned it to Al a while ago I thought I’d throw it out there anyway.)

Response to Playing for a Draw proposal:

When teams are actively using the PFD strategy, it's because they are going to get sorely outshot and having little chance of winning usually.  In those cases, it is usually the other team's FW lines overwhelming the PFD team's DF line.  So having the bulk of the penalty going to the DF (1/4 of usual shots) isn't really a penalty because 1/4 of 0 is still 0.  The DF most likely aren't getting any shots in a PFD scenario.  In the off chance they are, it's usually very few.  The penalty needs to stay 1/2 on the MF and FW to be any sort of balanced bonus/penalty and not merely a free 7 points to add to the Sw or Df while retaining a decent chance of winning because I still get 3 out of every 4 shots from my FW line.

Physio proposal seems to be overly complicating things that are working pretty well right now.  There's no real way to measure what player is more important for any given team from match to match as it depends on depth at a spot, planned strategies for future sessions, pending auction buys, etc.  And how many footie teams need to carry multiple doctors in a match to treat multiple players all at once?  There's almost never more than one player per side down at a time, and for those of us who are skeptical of the flop, just a simple stretcher ride to the sideline seems to magically cure everything wrong anyway as within a minute the player is back up and running around again once the ref decides whether or not a card, free kick, or simply foul was appropriate...

No objection to the PK chance proposal!  I'd be fine with that.

As for the guaranteed shot chance though, instead of a "+1" code it makes more sense to have an "at least one" line.  As in, if a team is getting at least one shot from the area totals, then it stays unchanged.  If scoring chances = zero though, then the program allocates 1 scoring chance.  The only reason I can see to having this is the idea that "there is always a chance of victory" regardless of the odds against a team.  That makes sense.  However, in United there is already that chance with the 5% PK in every match.

CRD has lost a match before in which we gave up no scoring chances thanks to opposing GK posting a clean sheet and we gave up a PK.  Not good times.  Can't say I'd get behind a proposal which increases the odds a team losing that has everything in their favor to win, however the "at least one" instead of a simple "plus one" would sit better with me if a change were made.

If Sw is a specialist then the extra penalty should go both ways and be -3 both to and from Df.  Given how little of that we actually see in this league, it doesn't seem worth it to mess with just because.  Maybe it happens far more than I realize and you could point that out as to how the shift would improve gameplay or make things more competitive league-wide.
