MSWL United 2
Posted by Allan Sellers on Sunday, Sep. 25th, 2011 at 10:51 AM

I'm considering opening up a 2nd league with a similar format.

I'd like to get a mix of new people (we have a few on the waitlist) and people already in MSWL-U who have the time for another league.  No one should feel obligated to play in another league.

I MAY want to use this league to experiment with some changes to bring to MSWL-U over time.

We had talked about the expansion option, but I feel a little like we'd be trying to rig something to work when the format is already pretty solid.

I'm honestly not sure if I can get 30 managers.   So this is just a discussion/idea at this time.   If you'd be up for another United League please add your name here.

Thanks,

Al

I'll give it a whirl.

I'm interested in learnng more.  I like the idea of picking my own team to start a new league.

Brian Beerman on Sunday, Sep. 25th, 2011 at 4:43 PM

I am in and might be able to add 2 or 3 new managers as well

Graham Wilkes on Sunday, Sep. 25th, 2011 at 8:05 PM

Yes!

Running an experimental team in an experimental league? Sounds like fun.  Put me at the bottom of the list though, as I don't want to take a spot that someone new would otherwise get.  Always better to work in new faces, so use me as a filler if needed to get the league to a good number for you.

Kevin Martin on Sunday, Sep. 25th, 2011 at 10:08 PM

I'm definitely very keen (for the same reasons as Mr Beerman). As Kevin says though, it needs to have some new people as well. Hopefully you won't invite Dr Doom either, I never liked the guy, and he keeps winning my trophies....

I'm interested, If it is a GO for MSWL-U 2, I will search for new managers.

Rene Wilkens on Monday, Sep. 26th, 2011 at 1:26 PM

I'd be interested, too, though places obviously should go to newbies, first.  I'm trying to recruit some 'newbies' who I played United against in the eighties!

Andy Bate on Monday, Sep. 26th, 2011 at 6:48 PM

I'm in if you need me.

I'd be interested to see what happened if the experiment included an extra session as well.

John Holden on Monday, Sep. 26th, 2011 at 10:10 PM

Yea count me in Al if you need me ! I'm a sucker for New games!

Dave Dowson on Wednesday, Sep. 28th, 2011 at 12:45 AM

Thanks everyone for the comments so far.   I appreciate the thoughts on ensuring new managers fill the slots first.   Please ask any friends/colleagues to email me or signup on the waitlist.  Thanks!!

Just a thought (or proposal) concerning a potential United 2.0 league...

One thing I thoroughly enjoy about the other OLMEC leagues in which I play is that MF's and DF's more score more regularly and play an important part in the overall game.  If your team has only a couple of decent FW's, you can still remain competitive with a strong MF and/or DF.  I don't find that to be the case here in United.

As much as I love this game, it is difficult to deny that the strongest teams need only stock up on several strong FW's, a SW and a GK and they can consistently compete for the league title and/or Cups.  Sure you can take a different approach and build a team around 4+ strong DF's and MF's, while all but neglecting your FW area, and you may compete; but how many goals is your team likely to score?  I suspect a team like that, more often than not, would see a lot of very close matches (e.g. 0-0, 1-0, 2-1) and may very well end up on the losing side of many.

At this point in United, I have very little motivation to restructure my team so that its strength lies in the backfield/midfield.  Some teams have been able to compete for a couple of seasons using this method (e.g. PV seasons 5-6, DOR as of late), but in theory (and I would argue in practice too) this sort of team structure cannot be sustained at the top level for a significant amount of time - especially when compared to the "Alon Atie Method" of team building.

To take it a step further, in MSWL for example, you can play a 4-4-2 or 5-4-1 line up and still have a good chance at winning; that could not happen often in United.  I know that has to do with how the leagues are structured and I am NOT proposing we change the way this league is run, but it would be nice if a second United league starts to see if differences like this could be incorporated.

As I said, just a thought for the future should a United 2.0 league materialize.

If your needing a someone then i'm happy to play but if you got other player then thats great too :D

Jake Hanny on Friday, Sep. 30th, 2011 at 8:20 PM

Al - put me in the same boat as Kevin - would definitel be interested in an experimental team in an experimental league, but wouldn't want to get in some newbie's way.

Rob Peterson on Saturday, Oct. 1st, 2011 at 12:46 AM

As always I'm available  if required

James White on Saturday, Oct. 1st, 2011 at 2:40 PM

Thanks for all the feedback.  I've sent an initial info to those who expressed interest on this thread along with the folks on the waitlist.    If you don't get the email (likely because you didn't comment here, and that's fine) but would like to participate please email me.

Thanks,

Al

Another thought I just had for MSWL-U2:

What about the ability to trade CP between teams, much like in MSWL?

Brian Beerman on Thursday, Oct. 27th, 2011 at 7:35 AM

Like Dave D "I am a sucker" (for new games) - if not too late could I get the email and a stating position, please?

If enough lads on the waiting list can make up the full total - then let them have it and keep me out!
