BRB Proposal - Special Coach
Posted by Roger Mendonça on Wednesday, Jun. 12th, 2024 at 6:37 AM

Why?

To provide the option of creating a superstar

What does he do?

He is attached to one player at the start of a season. At the end of that season, that player gains one extra SL.

So, a SB who has reached level 5 becomes level 6, an Age II player who has reached level 16 becomes level 17 (but then ages in the normal way down to level 14)

Issues to consider

This coach cannot work with GKs or SWs.

Advantages/Disadvantages

If you attached this coach to the same player for his entire career, his skill levels could look something like this at the end of each session after he gets his bonus:

SB - 6

App - 12

Age I - 18

Age II - 20

Age III - 21

Age IV - 21

Age V - 20

Age VI - 18

Age VII - 15

Age VIII - 11

Age IX - 6

Would we want a superstar to be ineligible to be a captain? An Age V level 19 captain is a daunting prospect but you'd have had to make a huge investment over a number of years to get a player to that level

Readers Comments

I love the idea of a superstar.

Some thoughts:

Is there a concern about having a player at a top tier level for six straight seasons (I-VII)?

Would the player be tagged as a superstar? I'm not sure a club should have more than one superstar at a time. If Alon gets a player to Age IV or V and then starts another superstar, he will likely win every game for eternity (sorry Alon, it's just the truth). But seriously, I am concerned at the prospect of a club having 2+ superstar quality players at a time. Perhaps a cap/maximum SL is necessary, e.g. 18.

Overall I hope this one gets implemented. It's my favorite suggestion thuis far. Thanks Roger.

Thanks Brian, it's actually another idea from the genius that is Mr Rob Peterson.

It's also my favo(u)rite.

I'm less worried about two superstars because you only have one coach and you only get the benefit at the end of a season. So if I stick with a player from SB until he's, say, Age V then switch to a new SB, the old one has reverted back to the mean by the time my new superstar is Age I. (I'm sure John could do a more mathematically literate response than me,)

I would say that I don't think you could introduce this BRB into the game and also bring in the Dietician. That could create some long-lived monster players.

Cheers Roger,

Thank you to Rob for bringing this one around. Great idea.

I think you have allayed my fears on the subject. If we do this, I can't wait to identify and develop the 'Gulls' first mega superstar.

Brian Beerman on Wednesday, Jun. 12th, 2024 at 7:27 PM

Eh, a BRB is 200k. What is a CP worth? And what is it worth to raise a player from 16 to 17?

I'm again concerned this would upset the game too much - you're basically getting 14-17 extra CPs each season with this one.

John Holden on Friday, Jun. 14th, 2024 at 5:59 AM

I typically value CP between 15-20K.

Others? (I don't mean White Walkers)

Brian Beerman on Saturday, Jun. 15th, 2024 at 12:29 AM

I value them more cheaply but they aren't unimportant

John Holden on Saturday, Jun. 15th, 2024 at 5:37 PM

Looking at the comments on U2 aswell, there is clearly some concern about the strength of this BRB. I think it's difficult to pin down how strong it actually is.

In Season 1 you get no benefit. As the extra level is only granted at the end of the season

In Season 2 you have one player with one extra level (compared to a team who hasn't chosen this BRB)

In S3 it's +2, but of course you'll need another BRB because the first one will have retired

In S4 its +3, etc.

So while I'd definitely want the S3 or older player in my squad, I'm not sure whether the short term investment is worth it - especially when you factor in the risk of injury during their App years, and the cost to coach older players to +2 Fit (or back to fitness if they get injured).*

However, if on balance we're still worried they're too strong, perhaps this BRB should only be able to work on Age II or younger players?

* I think this trade-off between short and long term interest is actually what would make this BRB such an interesting addition to the game
