New Backroom Boy: Youth Director - Poll
Posted by Allan Sellers on Sunday, Sep. 16th, 2012 at 11:53 AM

One of the aspects of this game is options.   Most teams elect to go with the 5 backroom boy slots available (and of course today you can go higher, its just that only 5 are effective).  Teams have the option too of selling those player (rather than having them become BRBs).  You can also coach a player to become a BRB if you want.

One of the questions is: do we need more?  The answer is....well candidly I'm not really sure what the answer is.  However I'm introducing a couple possible new BRB ideas.

Currently teams have SBY players (6) that start at SL 2, QNL 0.

The proposal is that if you have a Youth Director BRB, then any SBYs you create will start at SL 2, QNL 1.

At times, and we've all done it, we might have situations where:

a) we forgot to coach an SBY or play them in a session

b) we have an APP that gets injured and unless we've coached/played them fully to that point, they run the risk of never achieving SL 10.

This BRB, by starting SBYs at a slightly higher level would prevent that from happening and gives the player a better chance to reach their potential.

A side effect I see is that teams COULD sign all 6 SBYs and then sell them at 15k each (since with that 1 QNL they'd have monetary value).   Most teams however keep at least 3-4 SBYs a season so perhaps its just the 1 or 2 that could fit the above scenario.  And maybe that's reason enough to make the 5th and 6th SBY cost 15k to sign IF you have a youth director?

Anyway, obviously there's some aspects to finalize.  The poll is here to see if there's any traction on the idea to merit further discussion and finalize something (again if there's momentum on it; if not, it goes back in the dustbin).

I would like to see QNL 1 in auctions, though.

John Holden on Sunday, Sep. 16th, 2012 at 1:02 PM

The idea is okay, but I think it needs to be made clear if these added BRB options mean we can have more effective BRB, ie more than the 5 now.

If I were to take on a Youth Director, would it be in place of one of the existing BRB options or will these options be on top on the 5 effective BRB now?

Mike Parnaby on Sunday, Sep. 16th, 2012 at 3:32 PM

Mike, there would be no restriction on the number of BRBs you have.  So this would just be another option if you wanted to put the resources towards saving an older player for the role.

Allan Sellers on Sunday, Sep. 16th, 2012 at 6:14 PM

ï»Im neutral on this one.

ï»I dont think it would be worth buying so I dont think it would be used much.

Alon Atie on Monday, Sep. 17th, 2012 at 2:37 AM

Could we make the Youth Director work like the NMR mulligan, but only if he has been on the roster for the whole season?  In other words, no Week 10 conversion for this one.

Andy Bate on Monday, Sep. 17th, 2012 at 3:11 AM

I outlined in MU2 how I can foresee this BRB being a 1-week guy, getting sold as soon as the SBYs are found.

Rob Peterson on Monday, Sep. 17th, 2012 at 11:01 AM

So much opposition to change in this league....

Brian Beerman on Tuesday, Sep. 18th, 2012 at 1:02 AM

How about if this BRB has no value?  If a team chooses to buy this player from another team, that would be on that team for not coaching or buying their own in an auction and kudos for the team that was able to sell this "worthless" BRB.  If the regular team roster stays at 30 players, this is one additional [former[ player that a team will have to carry to Age V or pick up from where.  That is probably going to cost a team more than the 90k they would receive for fire-selling the 6 SBYs.  Also, something along Andy's idea where perhaps the +1 QNL is added in session 10.  It is the same net effect BUT will make team owners still have to manage his or her squad effectively.

Rob Baptiste on Tuesday, Sep. 18th, 2012 at 3:06 AM

Just to clarify, only players can be sold or traded, thus the BRB in this instance could not be sold/traded.  So once they were assigned this role, they maintain that role until they retire as a BRB.

Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Sep. 18th, 2012 at 4:48 PM

I don't believe there is any need to add a Youth director BRB.

Abe Hamdali on Wednesday, Sep. 19th, 2012 at 3:43 AM

It's youth development fire insurance.  You don't have to insure your house, and most of us will go all our lives without needing it.  One fateful spark later though...  it turns out to have been worth every penny invested all along.  By 'spark' read: 2nd bad injury in a season, red card in session 9 that leads to a 2-match suspenion in a 2-match session 10 so the player can't play, being in the same division as Dave Dowson, etc.

That being said, the only other advantage is that Sbys would go up by 1 SL one session sooner.  That's possibly 4-6 more SL on the field for the first Youth Cup match (session 6, prior to the regular Sbys getting to SL 4, who go up after that session) that a team without one can't get.  That could equate to up to 4 scoring chances for or against, and a slightly better PK shot taking chance.  Outside of that, there's one other way this directly impacts game play.

If Sbys still max at SL 5, QNL 1, then you also have an advantage in that there is now an extra session where the Sbys do not need to play.  That means the older, higher SL players take the field instead without hurting youth development.  Being able to sit the Sbys without penalty in one session per season at your choice can be a very nice ploy to have in the bag of tricks over teams that can't do so without risking permanent SL loss.

If Sbys are allowed to get to SL 5, QNL 2 under this system, then that really starts adding to the SL available since the Apps would also potentially go up an SL one session before other teams.  Now we're looking at up to +8 SL per match over teams without this BRB.  That would make them more than 4 times more powerful than a Groundskeeper, who can only give +2, and only at home.

Kevin Martin on Friday, Sep. 21st, 2012 at 9:36 PM

Based on the voting and comments we will implement this new Youth Director BRB for season 5 of U2 and 15 for U1.  So the BRB will not be in play for this upcoming season and won't be an option at anytime during seasons 4/14.

The rule will be implemented in this manner:

1) The Youth Director BRB will be another BRB option

2) He will have the same aging approach as other BRBs (starts as Age I, moves to Age II, then after that is retired).

3) The Youth Director will allow UP TO 4 SBYs to start at SBY SL 2, QNL 1 (rather than the current QNL 0).

For the most part teams use no more than 4 SBYs in a season and I didn't want to see this become a "add 2 SBYs then sell 2 SBYs at 15k each".  Thus only up to 4 get the QNL bonus.  Of course a team will still be able to discover 6 SBYs in a season.  However, once they have discovered 4, the final two will start at SL 2, QNL 0.

Allan Sellers on Saturday, Sep. 22nd, 2012 at 6:38 PM

Al,

Can you clarify a point for me?  Do Schoolboys still max out at SL 5, QNL 1?  Or with this BRB system in place next season, could they reach SL 5, QNL 2 at the end of session 10?

Kevin Martin on Thursday, Oct. 11th, 2012 at 6:19 PM

They can reach 5/2.

Allan Sellers on Friday, Oct. 12th, 2012 at 9:49 AM

Big boost then, since the Apprentices will be able to advance in SL one session earlier.  For those who don't like doing the math, here's a comparison:

Without the Youth Director (note: 3.1 means SL 3, 1 QNL; 6.3 means SL 6, QNL 3), max possible SL:

Player   Sess1  S2  S3   S4   S5   S6   S7   S8   S9   S10  Final

Sby       2.0        2.1  2.2   3.0  3.1  3.2  4.0   4.1  4.2  5.0     5.1

App       5.1        5.3  6.1  6.3   7.1  7.3  8.1   8.3  9.1  9.3    10

With Youth Director:

Sby       2.1       2.2  3.0   3.1   3.2  4.0  4.1   4.2  5.0  5.1    5.2

App      5.2       6.0   6.2   7.0   7.2  8.0  8.2  9.0   9.2  10     10

Note the difference heading into session 6, the first round of the Youth Cup every season.  With a Youth Director, both your Sbys and your Apps can be 1 SL higher than without a Youth Director.  That's 8 SL more on the field, or the rough equivalent to an extra player for the match.  In every session beyond the first, the youth players will go up an SL one session sooner than usual.  Your apprentices wouldn't have to play at all in session 10 (unless you wanted them to because they cracked your T11).
