Backroom Boys
Posted by Rob Peterson on Saturday, Jan. 3rd, 2009 at 4:49 AM

The following Backroom Boys are listed (Scouts do not appear to factor into United):

  1. Physio - Reduces injury impact to fitness, cancelling an injury that does not impact fitness.
  2. Coach - Reduces CP cost to raise players' SLs by 1.
  3. Groundsman - Adds 2 points to apply to HFA.
  4. Youth Coach - Allows for SBY/APP to be coached during a session, taking the place of a game played.

In the first three, the rules state that a team may own multiple BBs of the category, but that only 1 may be effective. The 4th category (Youth Coach), can have 2 effective coaches. My question is, why would a team have multiples of BBs when only 1 of each can be effective?

Another question is what is the upper limit to the number of BBs that are allowed on a team? 4? 5? More?

Would it not mean by multiple as having a coach in every listing - ie a Physio, Coach, Groundsman and 2 Youth that being your optimum situation, unless it's an option to sell a coach but make sure you already have cover for him..

Good idea that perhaps apart from the youth coaches, only 1 of the other 3 can be used per game/session.

For example no point in having a bonus from your groundsman if you are playing away from home, and if you don't have a serious injury your Physio is redundant. So more options for a manager who has every kind of coach.

If I am wrong then why not restrict every team to 1 of the above categories (1-3) and 2 Youth coaches?

This is why I opened this topic... There's confusion over what the rules mean. I took the rules to mean that each team can have an unlimited number of BB's in each of the 4 categories (why a team would, I don't get at this point), and that they can use 1 of each category (2 Youth Coaches) in each match/session.

The other interpretation could be that you can have a maximum of 5 coaches, and only 1 (regardless of the category) can be used per session/match.

OK Rob as you moved the topic over here I'll repost my questions

How many backroom boys allowed per team (Will it vary according to division) or perhaps be linked to success.?

Say a team that wins a cup or league title is permitted to add an extra 'backroom boy'?

Dave Dowson on Saturday, Jan. 3rd, 2009 at 9:50 PM

For the Backroom Boys, here's how I think it will work:

  1. I see each new backroom boy as assigned to one of the 4 roles (and that assignment can't change).  At least that's my take on it.
  2. There is no upper limit to backroom boys (though I may set one just for coding/accounting for them purposes).  Maybe that number is 6-8 (not sure yet).
  3. Because of the way older players may 'become' backroom boys, its possible that you'd have more than you could use at a given time (what if you had a bunch of declining Age V guys for example)...so rather than just let them retire...take advantage of them as backroom boys.
  4. Backroom boys have a 2 season lifespan.  So you might have an Age I backroom boy for Physio and an Age II one for Physio...when the Age II one retires then you the Age I guy becomes an Age II and you can still fill the Physio role.
  5. They can be traded/sold.

I would say for right now I might artificially restrict the number at 8 (in terms of perhaps trying to fit these guys in the orders page).  Also, for now they will be a "use them if you have them" sort of thing rather than tied to success/division.  Perhaps later on we can rethink that.

Also, if people like the idea of just saying "you can only have 5 at a time" then I'm okay with that too.  That might add to the challenge in terms of how/when to retire players.

Initially though we'll have some differentiation between divisions on the starter teams.

I think the strategy here will be to figure out when to keep a player versus when to let them become a backroom boy.

Feel free though to argue/discuss/debate more here on this though.  I'll keep listening.

Thanks,
Al

Is there any restriction on the number of BBs that can be effective in a given session? ie - can I use both a Groundskeeper AND a Youth Coach in the same session, or are we going to restrict that to just 1 (or 2) that can be effective per session? Personally, I think it would be interesting to only allow 1 or 2 to be effective at a time as it would force managers to make decisions as opposed to just having 1 of each type without having to weigh the pros and cons of using each.

Rob Peterson on Sunday, Jan. 4th, 2009 at 8:48 PM

Is there any difference between an Age I and an Age II BB? Is an Age II BB more effective than an Age I? Or is the Age II just to delineate that the BB is going to retire at season's end?

Rob Peterson on Sunday, Jan. 4th, 2009 at 8:49 PM

I don't think there'll be a great need to limit the number of BBs as aging is going to auto retire them anyway.

It'll be tricky enough, I suspect,  to balance your roster and make sure you have 3 age V players anyway that you can change to BB and who are poor enough players that you won't miss them from your main team.

David King on Tuesday, Jan. 6th, 2009 at 4:24 AM

David makes a good point. Realistically, how many *can* a team have, not how many *should* they have. In this inagural season, there are going to be very few Age V players.

Rob Peterson on Tuesday, Jan. 6th, 2009 at 4:57 PM

Okay, I will initially go with no max restriction and re-evaluate that down the road.

Al
