Team Recommendation?
Posted by Allan Sellers on Sunday, Jan. 18th, 2009 at 4:55 AM

You know, I'm here in the USA (near St. Louis) and I need a good recommendation for an English team to take on.  I've tentatively assigned myself Torquay for the obvious John Cleese/Fawlty Towers references...

But what can you guys in England recommend to me?  I need a team with history, character, whackos, etc.

Thanks!
Al

I'm with Al on this one. Any help from our UK friends in a "good" team would be greatly appreciated - a team with character...

Right now, I have Plymouth Argyle, but that's only because Ian cried to Al that he wanted his beloved Preston North End.

How about Nottingham Forest and / or Leicester City, both with good history behind them.

I can reccomend BRENTFORD currently in English league 2 (division 4 effectively)

But they have a wonderfull history & pedigree

My father who is 82 has supported them all his life

They hold the record for being top of the first division for the longest period of time (or so my dad claims)

apparently they were top of the table when the second world war was declared & because football stopped for 6 or 7 years he claims they were top dogs for 6/7 years

try arguing with him!

known as the BEES

heres something from Wiki on them

Brentford Football Club are a professional English football club based in Brentford in the London Borough of Hounslow. They are currently playing in Football League Two. They were founded in 1889 and play their home games at Griffin Park, their home stadium since 1904. Brentford's most successful spell came during the 1930s, when they achieved consecutive top six finishes in the First Division. Since the War, they have spent most of their time in the third and fourth tiers of English football. Brentford have been FA Cup quarter-finalists on four occasions, and have twice been Football League Trophy runners-up.

Notts County (Nottingham based)are the oldest professional team in England.  Not much more history than that.  They are nicknamed the Magpies, playing in Black and White.  Juventus play in Black and White because they got some old kit from  County.  They have won the FA Cup once, and have been managed by incredible 'characters' like Jimmy Sirrell and Neil Warnock.

My other suggestion is Luton Town.  Another old club and traditional local rivals to Watford.  Luton play in White shirts with blue shorts.  They are currently bottom of Division 2 (4th) in real life having been docked 30 points for various finacial misdemeanours and face almost certain relegation to the Football Conference.  This state of affairs means that Watford may never play them in the league again,  MSWL- United peraps offering the only way to keep the fixture alive!   Luton are nicknamed the Hatters after the once famous local milinery businesses.  They famously won the league cup in 1988 against Arsenal. Perhaps the best remembered moment though is when David Pleat, their manager, danced across the pitch after Luton avoided relegation in 1983 by beating Manchester City on the last day of the season.  City were relegated.

Just back to Dave - Brentford played at Griffin Park which was (still?) the only ground to have a pub outside each corner of stadium.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffin_Park

Indeed it does & my dad says he & his mates would do the '4 pubs tour' before home matches in the 50's

Thanks Mike, Dave, and James.  I'm going to go with Brentford!

After a little bit of research into Plymouth Argyle, I've decided that they're a pretty decent lot. I think I'll keep em.
