BRB option - Commercial Director
Posted by Roger Mendonça on Friday, May. 31st, 2024 at 11:59 AM

Why?

Currently all BRBs are designed to improve either your squad (Coach, Youth Coach, Youth Director) or your chances in a match (Physio, Groundsman).  This BRB gives you a completely different option - improve your bank balance.

What does he do?

Gives your bank balance a boost.  A couple of options for how this could work.

  1. An upfront lump sum - say 500k
  2. An extra amount of cash per session - say 75k per session

This could be fixed to just one option or it could be a managerial choice between the two options when discovering the BRB.

Issues to consider

Upfront boost only / Per Session only / Manager’s choice?

How much should the boost be?

Should the tax limit stay the same or increase/decrease so hoarding cash doesn’t become a problem?

Advantages/Disadvantages

A completely new type of BRB gives you a completely new type of choice, which might be especially useful for a team in the process of rebuilding, but could just lead to price inflation at transfer time as there’s no change to what you can spend your money on

I should add that this BRB was Rob's idea. I think it's one of the better ones (certainly better than my suggestions) as it provides a genuine point of difference with other BRBs.  Who wouldn't want extra money? But do I want him enough to forego a Physio or Groundsman...?

Roger Mendonça on Friday, May. 31st, 2024 at 12:02 PM

This is my favorite so far. The overall concept would be a strong addition to the game.

I worry that a high value earned would see BRB's jump from the standard & reasonable price of 200K, to a player likely to never be bought, e.g. 500K from the BRB's feature plus the standard 200K. I can't think of a situation where I would spend that much cash. I would personally err on the side of not too much.

A thought about a new BRB: To make BRB's more valuable, what if we limit the number of BRB's a team can carry to a value less than the maximum, e.g. right now the limit is six, but what if there were 7-8 coach options available. I think that might significantly increase the strategic value of the coaches.

Brian Beerman on Friday, May. 31st, 2024 at 4:23 PM

Good point Brian - would anyone sell a BRB for 200k if they thought the purchaser was going to immediately get 500k for it? Probably not. Maybe the one off boost should be at, or closer to, 200k - less of an impact but perhaps still worth it as an investment over two years?

My preference is definitely for keeping the limit to 6 per team so you have to make a choice of which one you want in a team. Might involve some new rules about trading...

Roger Mendonça on Friday, May. 31st, 2024 at 5:02 PM

Yes, absolutely I want to keep the number of "Active BRBs" to 6. Part of the desire and appeal for me is diversity and strategy. If we have a system that allows limited times to change the BRBs that you have "active" then it will allow for managers to have strategies. We'll see some things happen as a matter of course, like Youth Director is really only needed at the beginning of the season and does nothing after that.

But if we have a stable of say, 10, strong and viable BRBs that all have good benefits, then we'll start seeing different managers do different things and we won't be carbon copies of each other.

Rob Peterson on Saturday, Jun. 1st, 2024 at 2:27 PM

quite agree. having more options but keeping the 6 limit will hopefully make it interesting with different managers trying different things

Vick Hall on Tuesday, Jun. 4th, 2024 at 1:11 PM

I think this one makes the most sense, but the problem here is that he has to be a clear and reasonable advantage above and beyond the 200k going price. (...Or does he?)

The numbers proposed above are really way too high - my initial thought here is that he gets you an additional 5k for every home game. So there's an element of luck involved. But 18 home games - the minimum - over two seasons * 5 = 90, so maybe it needs to be 10k or 15k for every home game. 15k seems like a good compromise and would have the added benefit of helping make a cup run more lucrative.

But it shouldn't really be more than 10-15k per home game. Just like the Groundsman, who has an important but overall relatively marginal impact on the game.

John Holden on Tuesday, Jun. 4th, 2024 at 4:33 PM

Great points John.

Another possibility: This coach supplies additional GPP, not cash.

Brian Beerman on Tuesday, Jun. 4th, 2024 at 10:34 PM

I agree on the 6 BRB limit - you have to pick and choose.

For this one it would be good to gave a financial BRB, but not keen on the flat rate aspect.  The x amount per  home game seems a reasonable compromise.

My idea on this was instead to link to auction successes. For each successful auction purchase the commerical director would recoup x% maybe 10% maybe 20% through shirt sales and markerting of the players image.  Normally each team picks up 2-3 auction players a season with total spend 2000-2500K so a 10% return would be around 400K over 2 years.  But if you don't win any then you lose out.

Allows also some planning.  If you don't have much cash then maybe the commercial director is not for you.  if you do have the cash then maybe he is.

James Tucker on Wednesday, Jun. 5th, 2024 at 6:54 PM

Funnily enough James, Rob had another idea similar to yours - although he termed it Marketing Director. I was less keen on this one for two reasons.

One, I'd rather find a way to encourage more inter-team transactions than make the auction more attractive, and

Two as you you say, it's a better option if you already have cash, and do we want a rich get richer option?

That said, it's an interesting option which, like the Commercial Director, gives a different type of choice to the current BRBs.

Roger Mendonça on Wednesday, Jun. 5th, 2024 at 8:23 PM

I don't think we need a limit per se - the number of overall players who can become BRBs is naturally limited.
