Disappointing session (Session 8)
Posted by Steve Turner on Sunday, Jan. 9th, 2022 at 5:09 PM

It was a winning session but I feel let down again. We played T7 against St Charles and we had better servers, receivers and defenders overall but too many service errors, too few aces and not enough digs sealed our fate. We were certainly better than the 0-3 scoreline would suggest.

In playing T7 I had to decide how to play the other two games and luckily got this correct with a 3-0 conference win over Mendon, that keeps us on track for a joint conference title, and a 3-2 win over Burlington that keeps us on target for 2nd or 3rd overall and a good seed in the National Championship.

Another disappointment in the recruiting as we once again failed to get a 2nd recruit. With just two rounds to go and only 820 RP it looks doubtful we'll get enough decent players. Maybe I shouldn't have gone for all 5* but Quincy have managed three.

The Fighting Crabs definitely underachieved a bit against the Scarecrows.  And that totally happens when you watch a game where one team gets hot and plays a little above themselves and the other team loses momentum and isn't quite as strong.

One of the interesting things here is the runs Max's servers went on.  Notice all the multiple service points (SPs) whereas the Crabs servers mostly just won 1 point on serve and couldn't sustain anything with all the service errors.  That's where some of the bad luck came in.  Can't get your serve in means you can never win the point.  I think the slight edge on attacking probably won it for St. Charles and they were lucky to win by such margins.

This type of "high quality similar skilled match" is where I'd like to see teams potentially have some sort of resource to use.   Like GPP in United.  Or an assistant coaching aspect.  Some tactic or additional strategy to help a team in these situations.
