BRBs
Posted by Rob Peterson on Saturday, Feb. 11th, 2012 at 8:14 PM

So, I've been doing some thinking about BRBs for a couple seasons (back over in MSWL-U1) and figured I'd start up a new topic here after seeing some of what was being talked about in the "Special Players" category.

It's my opinion that every team has the capability to perpetually restock their own BRBs every season. This is the current state in MSWL U1 (those teams that cannot do this in U1 aren't doing it right or have a specific strategy). In U2, it will take another season or 2 before teams are at that point, but it is 100% possible for every team to get there.

Additionally, with the ability for all teams to fully stock all 5 BRBs every session, teams become "standardized" and there's less variety out there.

With that in mind, one of my ideas to introduce new BRBs into the mix, BUT only allow managers to have X number "active" per session. As part of the order building process, a manager decides which BRBs to activate and use (ie, if you have 0 home matches, it makes no sense to activate your Groundsman). This will add a new dimension to the game as you have to try to determine what BRBs are best for you that session, and which ones your opponents might employ. This will also make managers think a bit more about strategy for those aging players... those who plan well will be able to stock up on a variety of BRBs and have flexibility. Those who don't may find themselves paying a premium for a needed BRB, or going without that flexibility.

I also have some ideas for new BRBs (some of these have come up in other forum topics.

BRB Effect
GK Coach +2 to GK
Fitness Coach -1 CP needed to increase FIT on a player - not sure if Age I players should be exempt from this, but it would be helpful for the Age III & IV players.
Scout +5 points to the "counter" area against 1 opponent's strongest area (ie, if the chosen opponent's best SL is in the FW, a +5 boost would be given to your DF)
Diving Coach Initially I was against this idea when I read it on TPL, but diving is a real thing and it certainly would be an interesting thing to see employed when playing against Mr. Dowson and his 10 Hardness.
PK Coach +10% to PK shot success

Allow for multiple Physios to be used - this would be VERY helpful when playing against Mr. Dowson.

Allow for a 3rd Youth Coach to be used at the expense of not being able to use a regular Coach - this would be useful to teams going through a rebuilding season.

Note sur eI'd be in favour of a limit on brb numbers: that sounds very artificial. I mean, if you have them on your books, they should be usable. If it really is easy to get consistently to 5, then that would be an argument to up the level needed for conversion to 3. Obviously there would have to be a couple of seasons notice for that. That would then put the emphasis on skilful play in controlling numbers, rather than blanket ban.

Gk coach: would this just increase whichever gk was playing, or a one-off gain to an individual player? Does the bonus only continue while the coach is in place? It sounds very powerful at +2,

Fitness coach: would work but not sure the formulation is quite right, and wouldn't feel right to exclude age I's. It might be more intriguing to allow a fitness coach to coach for free one player for fitness each session, as long as that player didn't play that session (intensive training).

Scout: not sure.

Diving coach: this was nice as a one-off gimmick, but it would feel wrong to have as a regular item. Al has to think about how much work he wants to put into one-offs.

PK coach: not sure it would be worth picking one above the other brb options, the benefit is slight. might work as a novelty. We could just have one, and sell him round each session to whoever was playing tonbridge!
