Normal programming (Session 5)
Posted by Matthew Fowler on Monday, May. 20th, 2024 at 10:30 PM

Unfortunately the usual has occurred at Kentucky. After a decent start the losses are piling up.

Training will hopefully help get the occasional upset

Keep up on the training with the talented Freshman and Sophomores, Matt.  You had us on the ropes and we needed an upset to win last session.

Also, take a look at Fit and how you might get that up by resting some players.  By now, most of the top teams have all their starters at Fit +1 for the talent boost of +1 to each stat. That's huge.
If you want to bounce your team development plan this season off of some of us, I know I'm happy to help, and I'm sure we could get another manager or two to weigh in as well. Maybe even one that knows how to win some things around here!

So I should ask the Commish?? :D

Thanks Kevin, apreciate it in all seriousness.

So I'll ask. How does my development look so far?

Matthew Fowler on Wednesday, May. 22nd, 2024 at 10:30 PM

Lots of positives, Matt!  Your 5* tandem at OH are getting attention, and the younger L.  I would flip your CP focus and especially playing time to the 4* S Van Horne.  3* George will never be as good. At MB, I'd also sink time and points into Correa, not 1* Monahan.  With your new 5* MB recruit, Monahan is an afterthought.  If he doesn't play again this season, that's okay.

Suggestions:  Playing time at S - Van Horne needs to play 2 each session the rest of the year.  I know Cruz is better for now, yet Cruz will be gone next season and Van Horne is the Setter of the future for the next 2-3 seasons unless you recruit a better one soon.  You're in rebuilding mode now after your start, and Van Horne will need all the playing time he can get to be able to get the XP so you can get a point added to all 5 stats.  Kenny G really doesn't need any more time (maybe one match) if you want to raise Set and Serve with XP end of season.
Similarly at RS, Schneider is better.  Hughes needs the time if you want a 'free' Def point.  He needs to hit 60 sets played and only has 11 so far.  If want to pass on the Def point, and use CP on the other stats, play him and Schneider as you'd like, and make sure Karsen Rattray gets in 8 matches or so to be able to boost all his stats with XP.
For the Fit thing: start a 3-man weave at OH and MB.  Example: match 1 play Kagan & Spackler; match 2: Spackler & Alonso; match 3: Kagan & Alonso.  Each plays twice.  Reynolds rests, and is now Fit 1. Next session: match 1 play Kagan & Spackler, match 2: Spackler & Reynolds; match 3: Kagan and Reynolds. Alonso rests, now Fit 1.  Repeat each session, resting one and playing the others, until all are up to Fit 1.  Do the same at MB.  Just pick what order you want them rested.
NOTE: Reynolds and Alonso should get the nod for playing time over Kagan.  Give Spackler any leftovers.  You're going to want the XP to get the most out of your 5* guys without ignoring the other positions.

At Setter, Van Horne is already Fit 1 and needs played twice each session.  George and Cruz can each rest a session and get up Fit in the next two weekends.  Same at RS.  At L, you only have two players, so nobody can rest until you end up in a 2-match session.  Rest one then.  Until then, just roll at Fit 0 for both.

If you'd like a detailed work up/rest-of-the-season plan for CP & XP as a team building suggestion, I'd be happy to provide it.  The scheming is one of my favorite parts of the game and I don't mind at all looking at what 'could be' for another team by season's end too.

Brilliant tips Kevin!

Kevin, would appreciate that very much.

Do you prefer on here or a message somehow?

Thanks again

Matt, I sent an e-mail to the address listed on the coaches page.  If you don't get it, let me know and I'll report that text here instead.

No need to repeat Kevin's mostly solid tips.

You just have to accept that it takes 2 to 3 seasons to build up a competitive squad. And - occasionally - it even takes an unexpected detour somewhat later.

Thanks Kevin, got it
