Aces (Session 4)
Posted by Roger Mendonça on Monday, Jan. 1st, 2024 at 8:50 AM

One of the glaring differentials in my loss to Quincy was Service Aces - Al outhitting me 14-4, with Hanson scoring 8 on his own.

On paper I can't see any reason why this should be the case - both my servers and serve receivers appear to be better (on average). So was it just a bad day at the office? Or am I doing something wrong? Answers on a postcard....

Definitely not something wrong. It makes no difference where your serve receivers are in the rotation  The server serves, random numbers decide how good the serve is, who he serves to, whether it's out and finally how good the return is (an ace being the worst)

I have thought this could be possible game enhancement for optional tactics.

Safe Serve - Fewer errors, fewer aces, better targetting of weakest receiver.  Suits less good serving teams against poor receivers

Normal Serve - As now

Aggresive Serve - More chance of an ace, more chance of an error  Suits a good serving team with poor defensive attributes?.

I am interested to know, as I have no idea, what tactics an actual Volleyball team employs or might employ to suit a teams strengths and weaknesses either themselves or their opponents.

Ironically...

Over the Christmas holiday I was cleaning off one of my desks (I do it every 3 years I guess)...

I found a notepad where Max and I had some TMVL tactic ideas.

One of them was related to this.

Roger/Steve/JT - please put on your calendars to drop me an email on April 1st if I haven't taken this up with a forum post.  There were 4-5 potential tactic ideas on the notepad that we can talk about further to see if anything reasonates and can be implemented.  If we did something we'd probably start small and not add a bunch of things at once.  I'll be distracted until that time with our schedule going to Max's matches.

With this idea too, think about if its a "player" or "team" setting.

Thanks!
