Poll: Auctions and Backroom Boys
Posted by Allan Sellers on Saturday, Aug. 28th, 2010 at 10:36 PM

There's been a lot of good discussion recently about Backroom Boys (see link) and what to do with them relative to auctions.   Lately it seems as though one BRB is auctioned off for every two available.  And we know that these players can be traded (as Age V players) cheaper than the auction minimum bid.

I'd like to put this to a vote and then tune further (if needed) the most popular choice.

A quick explanation on the choices:

1) Drop the auction minimum bid for BRBs to "about" 160k for an Age I and "about" 80k for an Age II (prices can still be finalized).

2) Add an age V player to where we have previously offered a BRB.  Ideally I'd prefer this to be an Age V SL 7 player (which is worth 100k as a min bid).  We could have a range of Age V's to choose from (SL 5 at 60k through SL 8 at 120k?) but ultimately I'd like to continue to tie the player's Non League Sale value to the min bid here.

3) Remove the BRBs from all auctions and add another player.

4) Remove the BRBs from all auctions and do not add another player.

You'll find these choices below in a more abbreviated fashion, but just wanted to explain them further above.

Interesting voting so far...and it in general matches my thoughts that there are a lot of possibilities but 'something' needs to be adjusted.  Thanks gentlemen (and Ian if he can be bothered to weigh in...).

If we're not also going to address the root of the problem (that being that no team ever needs to buy a BRB from auction due to the extreme ease in creating 3-5 each year from within the team), then let's just 86 them from the auction and add nothing.

Rob Peterson on Monday, Aug. 30th, 2010 at 2:41 AM

I would argue against Mr Peterson's theory that "no team ever needs to buy a BRB," else we would not see teams trading/buying them from other managers throughout the season.  However, I also see no significant need to place the BRB's in auction as they rarely fetch much interest.

Adding another player (aged or youth) to the auction should only benefit the league as a whole.  Perhaps the added player (if that's the route we go) could be a somewhat lower-tiered player, or perhaps even a very high level player (e.g. APP 7, II/14, etc.).  Or I suppose it could just be another randomly generated player like all the rest.  (Just throwing ideas out there for discussion)

I do agree that creating BRB's in your own team's system is relatively easy, so there really is no need to provide them via auction.  For those who have difficulty in this area (for one reason or another), there will always be players available via trades.

Brian,

For every team that doesn't have enough aged talent on their rosters to create their own BRBs, there are 5-10 teams out there with a surplus who are willing to trade. All it takes is a little bit of planning, and no team would ever have to look outside of their own organization for BRBs.

Rob Peterson on Monday, Aug. 30th, 2010 at 8:43 PM

Boozing so forgive my math in advance, but in order to get a BRB you need to have a V/2, which implies a IV/7, which implies a III/11, which implies a II/14, which implies a I/15?

What I'm saying is I gots to purchase 2 BRBs at the start of next season 'cause I only got one IV/7. This will get better over the next couple seasons, but depending on the team and how they choose to develop players, you may have to wheel and deal to get age V players, and the auction is a way to do it - albeit rather expensively.

I have no point but to say Rob is correct, but not necessarily correct.

John Holden on Tuesday, Aug. 31st, 2010 at 2:05 AM

Not really sure on this one, with good planning you should not need to purchase them via the auction, as others have said they rarely fetch any interest but they do help the clubs who dont have any and need one, rather than trading which i feel some people do not like doing as there is a fair bit of apathy on that front they can pick one up easily in the auction.

Not having them makes people think a little bit more about forward strategic planning and with that in mind i would be for removing them. Adding another player to me would possibly reduce the prices of players further as there would be too many players introduced each session, maybe as you say introduce a level V is the way forward, but again that would bring into the game alot of age V players. Its a difficult one.

Simon Compton on Friday, Sep. 10th, 2010 at 12:23 AM

Can I just clarify that my idea about replacing BRBs in the Auction with an Age V player was to remove all BRBs but to only add one Age V player to each auction, regardless of how many BRBs there were originally in the auction.

I'd still favour a random SL level between 8-11 (or 12), which is the SL level they currently appear at when they do crop up in the draft.  Obviously minimum bid would relate to their worth as an Age V player.

Andy Bate on Saturday, Sep. 11th, 2010 at 7:15 PM

I've sent an email earlier indicating that I intend to put above voting results into place for Season 7 (including with the pre-season auctions).

However, its fair to say that more often than not new rules should allow for advanced warning (of a season if possible).

At the same time, my analysis of pre-season 6 non-auction transactions is that in the majority of cases, Age V players (that could be converted to any BRB) were going for between 150-200k.

If anyone can make an argument that you think this change will be unfair and result in prices approaching the 275k mark (which Age I BRBs sold for in auctions), I'm open to hearing that.

Thanks!
