Proposal: Golden Glove Award
Posted by Brian Beerman on Friday, Apr. 8th, 2011 at 9:09 AM

Proposal is from Rob Baptiste (I'm just impatient)

Award for Golden Glove (25k) for the GK with the best save percentage in league play per division per season.

This would be awarded just like the Golden Glove bonus: one winner per division per season.  In case of a tie, bonus is awarded to the GK with the higher number of shots faced during league play.

Any objections?

Readers Comments

Surely you need a minimum number of shots faced to qualify for the award?  Otherwise no objections in Hereford.

Andy Bate on Friday, Apr. 8th, 2011 at 11:43 AM

Andy: That sounds appropriate to me.  Perhaps a minimum of 30 or 40 (i.e. approximately two per match).

Brian Beerman on Friday, Apr. 8th, 2011 at 3:35 PM

Is a Brighton player currently winning?

John Holden on Saturday, Apr. 9th, 2011 at 2:02 AM

Looks like Glen Fox (of Lewes) would be the winner for with Max McLean being the runner-up or if done by division, Ashton Cole (Sheffield) for Div. I and Rodrigo Herrera (Dorchester) for Div. III.

Rob Baptiste on Wednesday, Apr. 13th, 2011 at 12:21 PM

Al...Does this sound like something the league could vote on for addition in season 10 (or 9 if you think that is feasible)?

Brian Beerman on Saturday, May. 14th, 2011 at 3:51 AM

Brian,

I think we would need to solidify the criteria first before we vote to incorporate it. Somewhere (either in MSWL, or another league), there was an actual formula that calculated Golden Gloves. It can't just be most saves and can't just be highest save pct (the former would always go to one of the worst teams in the league, and the latter would almost always go to one of the best) - a balance between the two needs to be struck.

Rob Peterson on Sunday, May. 15th, 2011 at 4:24 PM

I think as long as the GK meets a minimum shots faced criteria (e.g. 50 shots faced in league play - no cup competitions), then the award should go to the team with the highest save percentage in each division.

Brian Beerman on Friday, May. 20th, 2011 at 7:17 AM

Award for Golden Glove (25k) for the GK with the highest save percentage in league play per division per season.  Minimum of 50 Shots Against GK faced to qualify.

This would be awarded just like the Golden Glove bonus: one winner per division per season.  In case of a tie in percentage, bonus is awarded to the GK with the higher number of shots faced during league play.

Brian Beerman on Tuesday, May. 24th, 2011 at 11:53 AM

Isn't this likely to just give 25k to teams who have already done well and probably earnt money as a result of doing well?  High save percentage surely equates to high games won percentage for clubs, unlike the Golden Boot where a team that doesn't do well might well have one player score most of their goals, whereas good teams have several good players who will share the goals around more evenly.

Andy Bate on Thursday, May. 26th, 2011 at 5:40 PM

In theory I can agree with the idea that better teams will have better save percentages over the course of a season.  However, theory and practice do not always agree.

In reviewing Rob Baptiste's forum entry on GK's from season eight (http://www.olmec.org/mswl-united/forum_topic.php?topic_id=149), and assuming I have read the article correctly, the season eight winners of this proposed award would have been:

Division 1: Sheffield 81.31% (finished 8th in division; 0k bonus earned after season)

Division 2: Chesterfield 84.62% (finished 10th in division; 75k bonus earned after season)

Division 3: Dorchester 80.37% (finished 2nd in division; 604k bonus earned after season)

If the above is accurate, or even close, then I don't see an award for Golden Glove automatically increasing a good team's already-overflowing-coffers.  Would an extra 25k significantly change season nine plans for any of the three teams above?

In my final statements about this proposed award, if the league is going to reward the player who performs the best at scoring goals, then why should it also not reward the player who does the best job stopping those scoring chances/shots on goal?  It only seems logical to reward both.

Brian Beerman on Friday, May. 27th, 2011 at 1:47 PM

Uh oh... I do not know or believe I had been able to separate the cup competition values.  However I did provide another value that could be used to prevent Golden Glove "tampering" and that is the M%, expected match percentage.  If the match percentage is less than 50% perhaps those Gk could be eliminated from consideration as it is possible they're facing a schedule to enhance their GK stats.  My own Jason Quinn would['ve been] easily be eliminated with a mere 38%.  My suggestion was not for most saves so the Gk that have been forced to play every game or just happens to be on a team that is horrendous is not the automatic winner.  Save percentage does make sense to me and a minimum number of shots faced (almost like any other pct. based stat) makes sense as criteria.

Your divisional Golden Gloves winners would be highlighted in green. O-Factor takes into account PK stoppage which I believe does factor into being the best GK or not.  With that said, I'd probably have Glen Fox as the Div. 2 winner. Bold indicates high values (but only for the players in this table, not the entire league).

Rob Baptiste on Sunday, Jun. 5th, 2011 at 1:29 PM

Apparently their names have been blacked out to protect the innocent!  Let's try again without colors - geez.  So much for the bold and borders also.

That's a first... redacted MSWL-U forum postings!

Rob Peterson on Monday, Jun. 6th, 2011 at 5:59 PM

Let's get this award up and running for season 13.  With a couple of slight adjustments, here is the proposal from earlier:

Award for Golden Glove (25k) for the GK with the highest save percentage in league play per division per season. Cup competitions do not count toward percentage (**may require separate statistic to track**). Minimum of 36 shots faced to qualify (i.e. average two shots faced per league match).

One winner per division per season (like the Golden Boot award). In case of a tie in qualifying percentage, bonus is awarded to GK with the higher number of shots faced in league matches.

Brian Beerman on Tuesday, Apr. 24th, 2012 at 11:09 AM

After speaking to a few people in this league and others, it has been brought to my attention that there already exists a top Goalkeeper award/rating in some of the other leagues.  I'm fine with just using/tweaking the formula(a) used to determine those leaders/winners similarly in this league. As Brian states above, a minimum shots faced should be used and one might want to include minimum number of matches.  I would make the minimum shots faced 50 however; the minimum league matches played  at 12.  I'm also for making this just overall Gk if the per division idea does not go through. In that case, use a portion of the formula below, M% multiplied by the actual rating or factor determined with a 67% minimum and the award be 50k to 75k.

If one wishes to avoid the "Yankees' Syndrome"... feel free to utilize some or all of the formula below:

Overall Factor: pTF/10 + SV% +PKf + GF, what is this you might ask?

pTF = (SV%-SLSV%)/SLSV% * M% where SLSV% is expected SV% based on SL and M% is percentage of expected matches to be played (2/3).  Either 12 (of 18) League Only or 24 (of 36) Overall would be the denominator.

SV% = actual save percentage

PKf = Penalty Kick [save] factor, PKSv%/(Sa+PKSa)*10

GF = [Shots on] Goal/Target faced per match Factor, (M%/(GFav-GSav)*(SqRt(GFav)*SqRt(5)/5))/2. GFav  = Shots on Goal/Target face per match avg., GSav = Saves per match avg.

Formula above is similar to that proposed in Season 8 - still no Clean Sheets nor W/L Records account for in the formula but definitely welcome.  I would say Clean Sheets (CS) would at least indicate that the team should have received/gained at least 1 point in the standings.

Rob Baptiste on Friday, May. 25th, 2012 at 11:58 AM

I'm looking into this now, just asking Rob for a little more clarification and then will put something in place.

Allan Sellers on Sunday, Jul. 22nd, 2012 at 10:58 AM

(a) I think the parameters for this have been set but did we ever settle on a minimum shots faced and/or minimum matches played threshold?

(b) The Golden Gloves stats page, I think, is displaying the overall stats for each Gk.  Not important as there is not even a separate Golden Boot page.

(c) What [award] is the guy in the middle holding?

Rob Baptiste on Friday, Nov. 30th, 2012 at 12:45 PM

Hi Rob, I'll send you an email on this to finalize the approach.  Please look for that.
